Just curiosity, DSG in sports mode more economic?

Featured Replies

I assume that driven carefully in DSG, 'S' mode the higher ratios would make the car more economic?

Using S mode makes the car use lower ratios not higher, as you'll see from the rev counter. So will give you better acceleration but worse fuel economy than D mode.

If you have Eco mode as well, that will restrict the acceleration and rev range, and often provides an automatic 'neutral' mode when descending hills. Opinion is divided about whether this gives any real gain over a driver driving sensitively.

Thank you, I found Manual change today and I know I have normal and sports ratios but I don't seem to be blessed with eco or hill descent.

Shame really but I do have a lot of fun with the Kamiq.

Higher revs mean more time spent in 2 cylinder mode in a 1.5tsi, so could/likely be more economical, depending on right foot.

You need a Mode Select button for Eco. I use it all the time on my Octavia (2020) SE L 1.5 ACT DSG , and the engine cruises at 1000 rpm whenever I lift off the throttle. Sometimes downhill, I blip the throttle to get it to cruise when it wants to remain in gear, presumably in the expectation that the gradient is too steep for cruising.

The eco mode disengages the engine from the gearbox on the level and not just going downhill.  In fact, it will even disengage the engine going  uphill.  It works by sensing whether the accelerator or brake pedal is being pressed I think.

Using S mode, you only have gears up to 6th available so 7th, the most economical is not used.  That plus S mode holding gears to higher revs means S mode is going to be less economical.

My 1.2 SEL will turn in 40mpg plus on a three mile run from cold on a winter's day with careful use of the eco mode.

Didn’t think a 1.2 had ever been offered in a Kamiq

Not sure if the 6 gears is true for a 1.0tsi DSG, I thought it was too, but I have seen S7, but only when cruising at over 75mph ( so expect it only cuts in over 120km/h)

You're right about the engine size, I was thinking of my Fabia Estate which I had for 11 years; my Kamiq is 1.0.

You are also probably right about S7 as I have only used S mode once briefly with the Kamiq and so was assuming it was the same as for the Fabia.
