I have a 1.5tsi manual gearbox estate with about 700 mile on the clock and have been having intermittent issues with engage 1st gear from stationary. Its fine most of the time, but maybe 1st and 2nd are a little notchy - other time they feel smoother engaging but the on occasion i struggle to get the car into 1st often when moving away from traffic lights. To engage 1st geat I have to change first to 2nd then I’m able to engage 1st to move away!

Like I say this is intermittent but sometime happens few time on a single short journey.

 

I’ve got it booked into the dealer in a few weeks but interested to hear what everyone’s thoughts are or if anyone else has had the same issue?

 

I've had a similar problem occasionally. The stick goes in but the gear does not quite engage, so i need to try few times. This happened with reverse and 1st gear. I have not encountered it recently and it was more frequent during the first 5 000 km or so. I also feel that it was more frequent when S/S was on. I always switch it off during winter time so can't if it really is so.

I get this very occasionally in my Mk3. It’s so infrequent I’ve never bothered doing anything about it. Just figured it was a quirk. My solutions are to take my foot off the clutch and try again (which works) or just pull away in 2nd gear, depending on the the incline of the road.
