Views on Bio diesel ??

Featured Replies

Hi guys right I'm surprised this hasn't raised its head at present due to the current ongoing issue around fuel prices. I'm living in Northern Ireland and I'm an HGV driver and I have got about NI over the weekend and boy am I shocked. The cheapest I saw for diesel was 155.9p tonight and no wonder the forecourt was busy as its sitting at 181.9p in fermanagh and 172.9p in Newry it had jumped 20p a litre from Friday in some filling stations. So I'm considering bio diesel but again with everything you hear the horror stories I did have a 1.9 cdti vectra that I run on bio from time to time when I was doing pizza deliveries and never had any bother only real reason I stop was because the garage stop welling it as they didn't have the demand for it. But I've been told theres acouple of places starting to sell it again in an around belfast but I'm wondering on people views in it skoda engines I'm sur eim going to get the people I here just knocking it down straight away but I'd be interested to hear from anyone using or used it .

The cap on mine, I think, says up to B5 so that's up to 5% biodiesel.

Personally I think it'd run fine, but I'd be worried about long term use as the fuel is also used to lubricate parts (e.g. the lift pump, the high pressure fuel pump, the injectors etc) and would be worried that the lubricity wouldn't be enough.  I'd also worry about the effect on the DPF.

The engines are designed to run on EN590 spec diesel, which allows up to 7% EN14214 spec biodiesel. Anything else is going to cause problems for PD or CR TDI engines as it is more viscous than mineral diesel and the injectors can't handle it. It also has a higher melting point so in cold weather you are likely to clog your fuel filter with solid particles of biodiesel.

Biodiesel is also an oxygenated fuel, so without a remap, it's going to confuse the lambda sensor since that control loop is tuned for the stoichiometry of mineral diesel.

Lubricity is one of the major plus points of biodiesel - it's one of the secondary reasons for allowing to be used in mineral diesel blends, to compensate for the lower lubricity of desulphurised diesel.

@octaviani Yes. Exactly which engine(s) (capacity, tune, injection system, code if known) are you planning to use biodiesel in?

Don't even think about biodiesel then; you'll save a little on fuel, until the engine and injectors sieze.

Why would the injectors seize if it has more lubricity (is that a word?) and moreover why do you think the engine would seize?

Damage to the injectors is the main risk as they're not rated for the higher viscosity of biodiesel. Biodiesel and lubricating oil are not happy bedfellows either, so fuel dropping into the sump could do damage also.
