1.5 TSI engine and real-world fuel consumption?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I recently bought a Scala, 1.5 TSI manual, and this is my first car with a petrol engine, ever. Anyway, I'm slightly worried about the fuel consumption.

I'm getting about 7,8-8,1 l consumption on average in urban driving. I'm rarely going on motorway. Probably a few times a month.

So is this a normal real-world consumption for that engine?

Also, found this info:

Scala 1.5 TSI DSG real World MPG/consumption is 7,7 lt/100km. It is expected to consume 40 percent more fuel than factory data in real conditions and during test drives.

Thanks!

For congested urban only driving and if you are a bit heavy-footed then it could be about right.  Having a manual might be worse too if you keep it in lower gears more often, as the 7 speed DSG might be more efficient for stop start, slow speed conditions perhaps.

I have 1.5 dsg and I do mixed driving and the long term average is 5.4L. I see closer to 7l  when the traffic is more stop-start.

Thanks for replying. Yeah, I'm mostly driving in stop-start traffic during the working week, rarely going to 6th gear. The weekends are the times when I'm going to open road.

The consumption today was actually 7,2l.

Oh well.

@Iggy_ZG so how does the Scala consumption compare to your previous diesels?

I went from a 1.9pd mk2 Octavia, which I thought had excellent consumption, to a mk3 1.4tsi (both manual) and to be quite honest there was not as much consumption difference as I thought there would be.

The petrol is maybe 1L/100 worse overall whether town or highway, but you have to drive to the respective engines differing characteristics, to get reasonable consumption.

From what little I have read on the high gearing of the Scala 1.5tsi I am almost surprised you get into 6th at all unless on a highway.

My 1.4tsi in 6th does does about 2100rpm at 100kph, what revs does your Scala do at that speed?

I have covered 1,390 miles now, so I have some useful real fuel economy figures. My Scala is a 1.5 SEL DSG. When I tow, it's with a 350kg trailer tent i.e. minimal wind resistance.

Overall to date 44.2mpg or 6.4L/100km
Typical consumption solo (mixed driving town/open road/motorway) - 46.7mpg or 6.1L/100km
Typical consumption towing (open road but quite hilly) - 41.4 mpg or 6.8L/100km
Recent 80 mile motorway trip at 70mph (110kmh) most of the way - 59mpg or 4.8L/100km

I have averaged 47 mpg over approx 7000 miles. Motorway driving 57 mpg and town driving 35 mpg. I’m very pleased.

Surprisingly, the indicated consumption in the car is very similar to my “real” data, usually +2mpg .

OMG, I apologize for replying so late! I totally overlooked your question. Honestly, I don't know. I never bothered to keep the data consistent. My most recent vehicle was a Corsa 1.3 CDTI, a 75 horsepower diesel designed primarily for city driving, and its fuel efficiency was acceptable. "Acceptable": my fuel costs weren't too high 😄

But then again, that was a different time. With this war, inflation and whatnot, everything is a bigger bang for the buck. Additionally, the 1.5 TSI is a more powerful engine, so a higher consumption is expected.

In the meantime, I got used to the petrol engine and learned how to drive it effectively.

On the open road I get around 5,9 l on average (for a 100 km trip). As for urban driving, it all depends whether I use A/C or not. So it's around 7.5 l on average.

Also, when it comes to changing gears to 6th, I'm following the car's suggestions. Here in Zagreb, the traffic can be REALLY congested in the morning/afternoon. So you can rarely change to higher gears. There are some parts of the route where I can drive the car a bit faster. At around 70 kph it already suggests that I should change to 6th ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
