Rattle from ~1400rpm to ~1800rpm, left front.

Hello

So i have what sounds like some panels rattling between 1400rpm and 1800rpm. Is this something people know the cause of?

Its a 1.4TDI(PD80) with ~190k km on it. Its been like this for almost two years.

Exhaust heat shield.

Check em all, from manifold to tailpipe.

Little tip I got concerning the heat shield. If you find the fasteners that held the shield in place have corroded away (and also corroded a hole in the heat shield)...get some plastic (think milk bottle tops or base of a plastic shampoo bottle). Place the plastic onto the studs that hold the heat shield in place, and using a deep socket, hammer the plastic onto the studs. Bingo, heat shield held in place and no more corrosion.

all heatshields are ok and i changed the fasteners for them late last year when i changed the gear linkages. I think it must be something else than the heatshield.

Is it the disc shield touching the disc?

no they are not, but the sound do seem to come from down somewhere in the front. its not a high pitch rattle, is a low pitch one. Could it be engine or transmission mounts?

curiously enough 95% of the rattle sound went away after i did and oil-. and oilfilter change yesterday. Cars are weird man!

Hmm, possible oil pump / 3 cylinder balancer shaft chain rattle?

Unlike the 4 cylinder 1.9 pd the 1.4 pd has an additional balancer shaft to try an reduce the vibrations of having a 3 cylinder engine. This is fed from the same chain that drives the oil pump and introduces extra stresses / wear and is known to fail at highish mileages - usually preceded by a rattle.

Not really weird, basic servicing and maintenance like changing the engine oil & filter are important and effective, but can only do so much to reverse any previous neglect and/or abuse.  Much servicing and maintenance boils down to simple clean and lubricate, oil changes a good example of both, even erasing error codes is a form of cleaning.  Many think they can ease up on servicing and maintenance on older cars when usually it's needed even more.  Keep up with the oil and filter changes and use good quality oil and filter if you want to have things last as long as possible.

Also timely air and fuel filter changes will help as well as, where appropriate cleaning MAF and throttle body.  Unless everything is reasonably clean you can be moving and promoting 'dirt' around the engine, which will eventually grind or clog items.
