Front pad wear expectations?

Featured Replies

Hello Fellow RS Owners, wanted to check with you how many kilometres you got from the factory-fitted brake pads ( front) . Mine has done 28K and had an independent visual inspection - he reckons the sensor could go up soon.

Miles (or Kilometres) is a very poor indicator of brake wear.

Someone who drives on quiet motorways (at night or where road isn’t busy) might only use brakes 2 or 3 times in 100Km.  However someone in a city with traffic lights every few hundred metres will use brakes lots, and those in hilly or mountainous areas will also wear brakes more.

Trying to work out average wear rate of above 3 scenarios to guess when pads will need changing is unlikely to be accurate.

Over 60,000 miles or 100,000 kilometers and you are doing well.

Less than 30,000 miles or 50,000 kilometers and you are not doing well.

A lot depends on your driving style.

Good drivers who plan well ahead, drive in an economical fashion, and maximise their use of engine braking to slow down, will have brakes that last a long time.

It helps to have a diesel engine, because diesel engines produce more engine braking than petrol engines.

Thanks for the inputs. I was surprised by the visual inspection results. 28K kilometres seems rather low but the sensor is yet to illuminate so I can only hope the result was wrong.

I am neither a sedate driver nor a very aggressive one. I estimate around 70% of journeys to be city, the rest are rural and on the autoroute. my previous car too was a similar driving profile and it went 75K kilometres without brake pad changes.

Ours had 6.4mm of material left  at 28,000 miles when it was last serviced, if that helps?
