Air induction kit for Octy TSI

Hi guys. I've already had my Octy remapped from 150bhp to a stated 183bhp and from 254nm to 316nm. 

 

Thinking about having an induction kit but I need it fitting as I do not have skill or patience lol! 

 

Any recommendations for a kit and any tips on best places to have them fitted please?

Did whoever did the remap not have any recommendation on better induction from the experience they have of tuning and the cars on the dyno?

 

Are they not a mechanic who can fit it for you?

I had a superchips remap (mobile engineer visit rather than plug in box). Didn't think about it at that time so didn't ask him.

 

Just wondered if anyone else on here has had one fitted. There seems to be quite a few different brands out there. 

What's your aim? You won't get any more performance than a good condition stock filter and intake. A turbo inlet elbow and a performance filter/induction kit will offer marginally more response.

If you are after more whoosh noise then go for it. Speak to a local garage who you might get to do the work and ask them for advice. 

I have just had an induction kit fitted to my 230 TSi.

After much research, I decided upon the Racing Line R600. At the same time, I chose to replace the Turbo 90 Inlet Elbow, Turbo Muffler Delete, Turbo Inlet Hose and Coolant underhose.

The car sounds better and is much more responsive. Next step is to improve the handling and then a Remap.

I would have thought that your Remap would be built around your current setup, so it possibly would have been better to change the hardware before the software.

I went to an official authorised Racing Line dealer that I found through their website. The service I received was nothing short of exceptional, great conversation, extremely knowledgeable and best of all, free fitting.

I would seek advice of a reputable tuner who specialise in VAG, they are more likely to know what works based on what data they see live tuning cars on a dyno.

The 'Flash Map' type people who come to your house obviously cover all makes and models, their actual knowledge of a specific engine type will be limited. 

 

The general idea is that 'stage 1' software is compatible with the cars original hardware and no changes are needed. Fitting an induction kit will give you more noise and marginal response/power if that is what you are after.

You could fit the kit at home with minimal tools, they are quite simplistic, pretty sure its a couple of jubilee clips to remove the hoses and pull the OE box off its mounts.

 

Here are two kits that are listed on Awesome GTI, they both claim Max power gains of 5.6 - 9.3hp... but it doesn't state what that is in comparison to, you would have to presume a stock car with a clean air filter.

If you were looking for a simple option just to help the car breath a bit better, look at a panel filter, you can swap it at home within minutes and it saves a lot of hassle.

Thanks all. I'm waiting for a reply from a local VAG tuning specialist but I do like the sound of the panel filter as a more reasonable approach if it looks a bit too costly for a full kit. 

 

I don't need it for performance as the remap has already provided ample performance boost.

If you're going for a Panel Filter only, consider K&N, I've been using them for years in various cars, and they really are second to none: https://www.knfilters.co.uk/

For a 1.4 TSI i would avoid a K&N if that is a treated filter than needs / cleaning & re-oiling to get any value / longer life out of them for the silly price. 

Actually i avoid K&N other than where a filter is exposed to water and dust etc on the likes of offroaders with Cone Filters.

 

There are plenty Performance Filters about, and many are no better with a 1,390 cc TSI with a remap than a good clean standard filter.

Well, there's one fitted as standard in the existing airbox, which will flow all the air you need.

ITG panel filter will do what your looking for a reasonable cost. Closed intakes like the R600 are great at what they do, once your at a certain level, but overkill if your not. 
open air intakes are all fart and no substance IMO. 
I have it in my head from somewhere that the K&N units didn’t actually filter even as well as the factory fitted units. (Although tired so google it yourself 😂)

The likes of the ITG panel will filter every bit as well as a factory filter but with better overall flow through it.

£340 all in for a full kit. I decided to go for the Pipercross panel filter and fitted it myself in about 10 minutes. Duly declared to the insurance company and the premium increased by £1.33 :D

I am always sure to declare modifications but Inever ever have i needed the need to declare a service item like a replacement air filter going into a OEM airbox.

   Fitted plenty reusable filters over the years.

I think there was a pith take in actually charging you anything extra.

Am I reading that correctly... you paid £340 for a Panel filter..?

Reads as though just the filter replaced with what cost maybe £36.   Plus the Insurance rip off of £1.33.

The standard air filter will be better than any aftetmarket filters. They dont flow all that much better. Afyer doing lots of research many years ago when I had my MK2 VRS TFSi. I realised there was only a 0.9% pressure drop between a standard and aftermarket filter. Basically nothing. 

I had a K&N panel fitted and I had turbo flutter at around 3k from memory. I refitted the standard filter through trial and error trying to find out what was causing it. The flutter went and the car ran better as the air was better smoothed for the maf sensor to read it more accurately.

Personally I would not bother with an aftermarket filter as they dont filter aswell or offer any increase in performance.

This is useful and persuaded me that a standard air filter is best for my needs.

(Years ago I had a Pipercross cone foam filter on a Rover 420 which made a great noise, but was a pain to clean. I left it off eventually as I got bored with the additional noise once the novelty wore off.)
