CV boot advice

Featured Replies

I've got to change the n/s CV boot on my 1.6tdi Yeti, a job I will have to do on the drive and I'm not really looking forward to it.

I've seen adverts for split CV boots that are placed over the driveshaft and then the split is glued up (vulcanized?) enabling the boot to be simply slid into place and fastened.

Has anyone tried this, any experiences?

NO!!! These kits are complete male bovine faeces!!

Don't exaggerate, they are far worse than that, bull **** has some uses!

That made me laugh!

As ken says they are a bag of poo ,fit a correct one to start with ,its what you will end up doing anyhow

As the lads say... buy cheap, buy twice.

I’m sure there’s no need for my input, but have to reiterate that universal CV boots are not worth the time or money IME.

I went through four in six years, all on the same axle because the rubber is so thin and easy to puncture with a small stone.

Go and grab a proper boot and a universal one and you’ll immediately see what I mean.

I paid £40 cash for each universal boot to be fitted at a garage each time, then decided enough was enough and bought a proper one from TPS for not much more than a fitted universal one and learnt how to change it myself. It’s been in a few years now and I’m confident it will last until my 17 year old motor goes to the scrappy in the sky :)

A funnel type dilator to stretch a good quality CV boot right over the joint is a very time & frustration saving investment.

Any seller of the split CV boots will tell you that they are brilliant, and indeed they are from their standpoint as they sell loads of them, like Jars once they have sold one to a new customer he will soon be back for more, what better proof of a brilliant product could you ask for? 🤣

I don't think I’ve come across a good quality cv boot that will stretch! All decent ones need the cv joint taken off to fit…. It’s the stretch ones that I’ve personally had issues with.

I will bear that in mind next time I think about using my dilator, assuming I can find it after the workshop move & set up in the new one still years ahead, its probably 20  years since I used it already.

And yes, they probably were special stretchy gaiters in hindsight.
