Fitting staggered wheels and tyres

Featured Replies

Right guys this topic I'm sure has more than likely been covered before but I end up getting confused with it but I am currently refurbing a set of BBS RS (well more like dare alloys) copies. They seem to be 5x100 and 5x112 fitment with an et35 7.5j and 8.5j. So first of all what tyres would be recommended to fit ? I'm thinking (and know factory size is) 225 45 17 , but will they fir the 8.5j rear wheels? Also I've been told either they won't fit or will be tight to fit the rears?? I don't have any suspension modifications done to the cat but I'm planning on fitting a set of sport springs  all round. So is there any bright minded people in the skoda community here  that I'm sure can rhyme this stuff of in there sleep or have encountered this problem before.?

Hi Octaviani, I assume that you don't intend to use the 5x100 and 5x112 wheels together, that you actually have two sets of wheels? - you are aware they are different pitch circle diameters (PCDs) - for different models of cars.

Well, in the first place 2 of those wheels won't fit your car.

There a multifit wheel (the 2 stud patterns on  the wheel) but I know the octavia is 5x112

That's interesting, never heard of those before - I assume aftermarket, not OEM. Have you used these before - if so, have you noticed any dynamic wheel balance issues with them?

OK, I (for one) was assuming VAG wheels. These clearly aren't, so what's the manufacture and the full size specification?

Don't know the manufacture we did think they where dare wheels but they seem to be Chinese copies. The fronts are 7.5j et35 17" and the rears 8.5j et35 17". I'm assuming the factory 225 45 17 will fit the fronts buy what about the rears.

Returning to the original question, a quick online search tells me that 7.5J will take min - 205, max - 235mm; 8.5J min - 225, max 255mm - suggesting the 225/45/17 should fit both sizes of rim.

I suggest running the 8.5J tyre sizes on 'Will they fit.com' to check clearances.

That's what I have done but I'm hoping they fit but was looking to see if anyone had any experience going down this route? The guy I got them off had them on an astra (wobble bolts) with 215 40 17 with a good stretch on the tyres. But they where on a mk5 golf who he got then off but unsure about tyres. I was planning on fitting the 225s on the 8.5 rim but was advised they would be too narrow

225/45R17 tyres can be fitted to rims with a width between 7J and 8.5J.

Approved Rim Width Range (inch) 7.0-7.5-8.5 for 225/45R17

Returning to the original question, a quick online search tells me that 7.5J will take min - 205, max - 235mm; 8.5J min - 225, max 255mm...

245/45 will fit 7.5J

255/50 will fit 7.5J

265/50 will fit 7.5J

275/50 will fit 7.5J

215/35 will fit 8.5J

215/40 will fit 8.5J

265/45 will fit 8.5J

275/45 will fit 8.5J

Search the tyre sizes on toyo as that website shows the rim widths that are approved. The allowable rim widths depend on both the tyre's width and the tyre's aspect ratio.

Tyre width and aspect ratio   Approved rim width range

205/40   7.0-7.5-8.0

205/45   6.5-7.0-7.5

205/50   5.5-6.5-7.5

205/55   5.5-6.5-7.5

205/60   5.5-6.5-7.5

205/65   5.5-6.5-7.5

205/70   5.0-6.0-7.0

As you can see in the chart above, as the aspect ratio increases for any given tyre width, the range of approved rim widths tends to decrease.

Can't you go to a friendly tyre fitter and ask them to fit the suspect tyre size to your rim to check for clearance? I'm sure they'll have worn tyres kicking around. It might cost you £20 or so but at least you'll know for sure.

It would be polite to get them to fit the new tyres of your choice once you've decided.

A lot simpler to just input vehicle, wheel and tyre details into 'Will they fit.com' (other websites are available) - you will get clearace details from that.

What ET do you have on the 8,5" rear rims ?
