if its ok with you, i might just copy what you just asked and paste it on a message to him and see what he says.

wouldnt surprise me as octavia is one of the best for cabbing/taxi so ive heard/read.

work away and copy whatever you need

ask about -

water leaks at doors, cabin filter, bonnet cable grommet, boot hatch hinges.

"bouncy" idle (if its not smooth the maf is dying, has to be a genuine replacement)

turbo condition.

has it had the coilpacks recall carried out?

when was the timing belt, thermostat and water pump done last.

what was the repair work done on it after the insurance write off.

suspension condition - including bushes etc. .

    1.  Once you commit to delivery you will find it much harder to back out, especially if they already have your money.  2.  Do the AA/RAC/etc. still offer inspection services?   Later: y

yip, it is (was) so popular they kept making mk1s in a diesel "taxi spec" up to 2010 that you had to supply your cabbie license to be allow to order..

They are good for taxis but the diesel will give around 50mpg and the VRs petrol lucky to get 30mpg that's why the taxis use the diesel ones

vrs only gives us 30mpg? my old car gave me something like 40 i think which i think is good. so sounds like the vrs drinks alot of fuel?

yeah i wouldnt mind hearing what the engine sounds like too, you can tell a problem by listening cant you?

i think they ran out of mk1 shells to use :D

also, they had released the facelifted version of the mk2 in 09 (iirc) so it was now 2 models old.  they had to stop, and the mk3 was probably in the pipeline for factory retooling etc...

It's a 1.8 turbo performance spec engine so the fuel consumption isn't going to be great, also as it's the VRs expect to pay more for insurance

i have already done an insurance check and its cheaper than my old car (fabia mk2) which i find strange as you said, its a vrs.

i wanted a car with bit more power than my fabia and wanted a car that is economical, i guess that would never work.

Just had a quick look through the "cars for sale" classifieds and there's a vrs saloon for good money advertised in Plymouth.  I haven't checked if it's been sold but there's no update on the forum to that effect.

fuel consumption varies on how heavy your right foot is too though, dont drive everywhere like your heads on fire and you may keep sonething reasonable on your average.

you can hear some problems alright, not everything, but make sure to get "in cabin" video ideally on the move too they can legally and safely record that and external/ under bonnet too.

In that case look for a 1.9tdi with the 130bhp ASZ engine, you'll get performance when you want it and economy when your just pottering around town

thank you, completely forgot we have a classifed section, will check it out.

yeah a live video?

for someone who may travel nearly 200 miles, it is best to try see everything.

my budget is very little, so looking at car shas been a nightmare, either its too far, too expensive or been treated badly.

i will see if i can find a car you mentioned though

That's the engine but it's also fitted in the Octy

what benefits on a 4x4 apart from taking it through woods?

On the road unless you're towing something heavy or you want to go rounds bends at very high speeds - none.

You also don't want to be looking at a VRs model, that model is usually for those that like to drive hard and fast so isn't set up for economy and will often be more worn if driven hard and fast.

Also be aware diesels aren't so good for lots of short journeys as they used to be, same with newer petrols', not that lots of short journeys have even been good for them.

“Distance Selling”

Under the Consumer Contracts (Information, Cancellation and Additional Charges) Regulations 2013.

https://www.themotorombudsman.org/distance-sales-faqs

You are protected under “distance selling” which gives you 14 days to reject a vehicle and cancel the purchase.

You will still have your statutory rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, which gives you the right to reject the car for a full refund within the first 30 days after purchase.

Due to covid lots of sales were done under “distance selling” where potential buyers could not inspect / test drive cars therefore needed this protection from dodgy dealerships where cars differ from what was advertised.

I bought a dented and scratched Mercedes from a main dealership in Swansea and had to go through this process - it was a headache and that was with a main dealer so expect more of a headache with an independent small garage.

Ensure you correspond by email not telephone so you have a record of all what is said.  Some garages will not answer an email and instead call you.  Be wary of this.  To protect yourself you need certain things confirming in an email.  Always hard to argue what was said in a call - your word against theirs.  If you think worse case scenario and don’t trust any dealer, you won’t go far wrong.  Regardless of who they represent, Mercedes or a one man band garage, there are bent salesman in my experience and what I have heard from others.

Obviously not all are but if you protect yourself initially it may save problems later down the line.

Hope that helps.

Mike

@froggy8  If you do not know about cars yourself Just buy a car local or near enough to not make it difficult if issues and from a trusted seller if they are in the motor trade.

See a car, drive a car and take a trained or qualified mechanic or someone with a knowledge of cars, the parts, the servicing, the drive trains, engines, gearboxes, awd systems etc.

Be aware of places that do their own MOT's or have a mate / pal / buddy with test station.

As far as a post earlier about what most Cabbies use.

What the majority use means nothing, because you are not buying the majority, just 1 vehicle and these days 'Fast Food Deliveries', and 'Home Shopping' deliveries are done in any type of cars / vehicles available and can do as many miles as a Private Hire / Taxi.

More miles and more stop start driving over lots of hours in a day than even taxis do.

CatC… I wouldn’t pay over £800 for that. I’ve seen one without being a right off just sell for £1200.

Better off going for the other x2 Red ones on there currently.

Most will find these in the FB market place, a hell of a lot cheaper than Autotrader.

Now for Diesel, do what Nige said. Got for a PD130. I get roughly 55mpg and I’m not a slow driver. £90 to tax for 6 months. Engine will outlive the car shell.
