Worthwhile plugging in VCDS prior to purchasing a used car?

Featured Replies

Going to view a used car, and considering whether I take my laptop and cable to plug in and scan for any codes.

How likely is it a trade seller would object?

Could it reveal any issues if there are no warning lights on the dash?

Thanks.

100% scan it, any honest dealer won’t have any issues.

only had 1 dealer object, turned out it had been clocked… by A LOT!

Most are ok with it from my experience, companies like the AA/RAC offer inspections so most garages expect it.
If they have an objection it would ring alarm bells for me.

Ask, and draw inferences if they refuse.

Always do this and clear the DTCs then take the test drive and see if any come back and then make a decision depending what shows.

Did this for a friend and it showed up a heater fan issue

I did and found the Aircon had no pressure. Would I of checked the Aircon otherwise ? As expected it didn't work.

Post purchase interestingly a regas lasted a few years no problems before the car was sold on anyway

It's also handy for checking the ECU Mileage is close to the dashboard reading, so no clocking red flags

Try that on your Yeti and you will learn as I did that the mileage check function only works with certain ECU's which doesn't include ours.

This, all day long.

I always take a scanner when I’m looking at a vehicles for mates. Only 1 place huffed and puffed a bit, so I told my mate I wasn’t willing to go any further and we ended up waking away.

I think what @J.R. was referring to that the engine ECU on some models also stores the mileage separate to the displayed mileage in the speedo and what you have posted

Correct, on my MK2 Octavia it revealed that the ECU I had fitted (preloaded with a remap) had come from a donor vehicle with much higher mileage.

The VCDS function (if your ECU plays ball) is intended to reveal that the vehicle has been clocked, the odometer mileage not corresponding to that saved on the engine ECU.

That's not the Speedo reading, close but not exactly the same number
