Yet Another Fuel Consumption Thread

Featured Replies

So... first proper journey in the vRS complete - 160odd miles up the M5+M6, including through all the ****** roadworks, in the pouring rain, and it returned a very respectable 39.5mpg. I'll take that 😁.

Sure as hell beats the very low 20s I'm averaging with my normal 1-2 mile kids' taxi trips.

Wow! That’s impressive, what sort of speed were you averaging?

I think the average for the journey was just over 50mph. Had the cruise control set to 65mph, but the M6 seems to be one long set of roadworks at the moment, and there was the usual queue at the top of the M5.

And to finish this off... came back via some A-roads to avoid the M6 rush hour car park... consumption was definitely lower, but a lot more fun was had in sport mode!

After yesterday, the vRS is beginning to make a lot more sense to me as an overall package. It is both a very comfortable long-distance cruiser, and capable of having some fun (without getting too out of control). I'd class it as a GT SUV rather than a performance one. It's definitely not a town car, but unfortunately that's where I'm going to end up using it most... downside of working from home (no commute) and so doing most of my driving as a taxi driver for the kids or to go to Tesco and back 😞.

I’d say the same for my red bus. Almost 400 miles round trip for a night out up north last week on some of the country’s best roads.

Fuel consumption improving as the weather warms up. 45.9 mpg on mixed roads into Glasgow on Monday.

But a few quid cheaper than a vRS.

  • 2 weeks later...

Due to the price of petrol recently, I’ve been trying to be good and the results are quite pleasing.

Reducing speeds from 75 on dual carriageways and motorways to 65, national speed limits to 50, my mpg has gone up from low 30’s to mid 40’s which means almost 500 miles to a tank rather than a miserable 360 I was getting. Happy with that.

Richard Branson would be proud of you.

Sounds sensible bringing your speed to or below the 70 mph, as for going 10 mph below the 60 mph NSL for cars can really can pee people off,

especially those that find 60 mph perfectly economic for their vehicles.

Often it looks like people trying to stick to 56 mph and not aware the cars speedo over reads.

Or those towing or driving commercials. (Flying Blue pigs if such a thing was to happen.)

Well, people need to remember that it is a maximum speed limit, not a minimum limit or even a must drive at this speed limit. They also need to not be in such a rush all the time, and be considerate to other drivers.

But then there's more chance of seeing your flying blue pigs, because people are arses.

Living in Norfolk, it’s seems the vast majority are doing the same. In major urban areas I can understand others apparent frustration but in the country, folks don’t seem to care. Must be something to do with the slower pace of life.

@CFB You were the one that posted about bringing your speed down from being over the Speed limit at times.

Flat roads with little camber and funny corners are an issue.

Well that is how they seemed to be for me when i drove in Norfolk.  It certainly slowed things down.

If the people in front are doing just 50 mph and you are not passing then that is how things are.

If the cars behind can not get passed or scared to because a Safety Partnership  camera van might be at the end of the only straight you can get passed at then people just need to go with the flow.

This can be the issue on many roads and especially oop north.

Being in the country there might only be 60 mph roads to get places and people have jobs to get to and from and stuff to be doing.

@Yogi-Bear

That was a good reply from the person that went for the vRS just for the tall seating position, good fuel efficiency / economy and ability to get past tractors or the likes safely.

This was a good post earlier.

I love how you assume you know everything about everyone. You could also quote posts, instead of using screenshots... but you do you.

Yes, it was fun when there was no traffic... but I also spent plenty of time sat behind traffic going slower than the speed limit. I do that too sometimes, so I'm in no position to get annoyed with them. And I didn't sit up their backsides, and I didn't overtake dangerously (I don't think I actually overtook anyone at all).

Not that I have to justify myself to you or anyone else (except maybe the wife) - but I went for the vRS because, in my humble opinion, it looks pretty nice and is better (again, in my humble opinion) than a lot of the competition (I've said plenty of times I didn't buy it for the power, and I was perfectly content with the 1.4TSI in my last bear). Pretty sure I've also said this before, but I did also look into both an Enyaq and an Octavia vRS iV - the deal on the Kodiaq was by far the most appealing.

I am winding you up.

You went off on one about max speed limits IMO.

I did on those ECO driving to save a few pence.

I could quote the post if that was easier, but i never so it is there just the same.

FTFY. HTH. HAND.

(ps. it takes a lot more than that to wind me up, don't feel bad about your failure)

If you want to go on about quotes, do not make up your own and put with another users name..

You have a habit of editing your posts after people have replied to them... so I just thought I'd save you the bother this time.

How many miles on yours? I've shot up to almost 4,000 after a busy Easter holidays (and motorway journeys are regularly returning around 40mpg now). It definitely started improving after about 2,000 miles, and has carried on getting better and better - it'll be doing 50mpg by the summer 🤣.

I find that threads are so much better when people self moderate.

That way there's no need for Staff to step in to restore harmony.

Just saying.........

1600 now.  I'm almost a hermit since becoming home based courtesy of the pandemic. 😉

Your point is?

I can’t figure out if you agree with my new driving style or not.

If you can call Tesco Momentum 'premium', then yes.

It's a good job the consumption has improved - it's costing me over £80 a tank at the moment 😭.

thanks.

similar costs for me too. its nice leaving the forecourt in sportsmode though allowing the fake audio to echo in the vicinity behind me 😂

Per tank nearly empty E10 = £85 & E5 = £94 ish (Esso)
