pros and cons (or just a con)

Featured Replies

I ran something similar on my Fabia PD100. On newer Fabia's this will likely throw up the check engine light (but this can be safely reset with VAG-COM). I ran mine for 25k without problem and I noticed a big dip in performance when I took it off. Fuel economy also remained about the same with it on, maybe slightly better :D

Interestingly, I left it on during servicing and MOT and it was not picked up. I paid about

Looks like a generic plug in box a bit like a tune-it.

Cheap as, but as to wether it is worth it well ther is only one way to find out. Problem with these things is if they get them wrong you could have serious engine problems.

Could it be combined with a remap? :D

It could, but all it does is overfuels so if it's combined with a decent remap it'll probably do a lot of damage

I got one last year for my 1.4 TDI. Certainly gave more power, noticeable on acceleration. MPG down very slightly. Biggest problem was less smooth on stop- start driving, which I was doing a lot of at the time, so took it off. Intend to put it back and try for a little longer after next weeks 50K service. No problem with management light, but I intend to get a quick fix resetting gizmo anyway.

anyone know if these work and what issues could i expect if i were to fit one?

thanks chaps

As the others have said, it's basically a simple eletronic device that tricks the ECU into overfuelling. If you have a new fabia (mid 2004 on I think?) it will cause your engine check light to come on. Safer if you get a proper remap (as it will also increase the boost and thereby mean you get more air in as well as more fuel), but obviously more expensive.

Plus, if you are going to buy one of those, don't pay

Why does everyone always say they bring on your Check Engine Light??

How many of you have actually tried these?? You can keep quiet Chris!!!

They will if you get one that doesn't provide the right signal change but not all do. Best bet is to look out for an adjustable one. Don't pay too much though.

I have done a lot of research on these, all of which has been covered many times over.

There you go,

I ran my Seat Ibiza 100bhp PD with one of these for a year and a half (about 20k miles) with no trouble at all. It improved acceleration, fuel economy and made the car nicer to drive overall.

I really noticed the difference when I took it off when my car went in for some warranty work and a service (wasn't taking any chances) and put it back on straight away. I won it on E-Bay, cost me £32 inc postage and packing and it came from Germany.

£17 ish quid, might cure the st st stutter too.

Thing is, where should I plug it in, and IF it does raise a fault code, will removing it make the code go away, or will I need VAG-COM?

Bought one anyway, it'll make a good Christmas present for a mate it I don't 'get on with it'

what isn`t mentioned is the HUGE cloud of black smoke that follows you every time you put your foot down. it was embarrassing when i had mine on. also the trip computer will give false readings, like telling you you`re doing 60mpg when in stop start traffic. I paid a tenner for one and that was too much. if you want to chip but not remap, buy a dragon tuning box or a van aaken one.

And this is a problem? Everyone will think I'm Jason:rofl:

Of course my car is UN-modified until the warrenty runs out, but i have tried one of these devices before,(on someone elses car) and to good effect for the cheap money.

points to consider:

GOOD:

1) more power. this really is noticable.

2) better fuel economy. true. tested by conventional means, not the trip computer.

3) cheapest "bang for buck" you can buy.

4) easy to fit, takes about 1 minute

BAD:

1) it will smoke. but is only noticable if you boot it from below 2000revs, be gentle with the gas, and just boot it from higher up the rev range and you wont notice any more smoke than normal. (use BP ultimate or Shell extra or bio diesel to help with this)

2) no reliability issues have been found with 20k covered. who knows what the long term implications may be with over fuelling though...... dead cat? I believe these enigines will pass an MOT without the cat at all, ask Jason!

3) in an '05 car the warning light will come on (well it did on the car I tried! as someone else said though, depends on the box you buy, and the value of the resistor inside!) this can easily be re-set with a cheap £25 fault reader bought from flea-bay.

my opinion, worth a go as long as you can clear the fault codes before you take it back to the dealers.....

also the trip computer will give false readings, like telling you you`re doing 60mpg when in stop start traffic

How can this be the boxes fault? All the box does is change the output from a sensor that the ECU uses to make decisions. The ECU is still in charge of how much fuel is being injected ;)

I also didn't have any problems with smoke, but my car was just about run in when I bought it (53k miles) :D

Chris

Just put mine on, bought it from that ebay link. A bit more grunt, a bit more smoke low down, and no CE light.

Now I know it works, I'll have a wee chat with the insurance company.:thumbdwn:
