Voltage drop at ignition off?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I've bought the blackvue dashcam that has the parking mode ability with the in-built voltage cut off to prevent the battery going flat. The thing is, that it goes into parking mode for about for about 10 seconds and then it shuts down (once I turn the engine off.)

At first I've thought it's the faulty device as I've set the cut off to lowest setting 11.6V I think. So I've measured the voltage at battery, at the fuse tap, at the cable running into the dashcam before I start up the vehicle, 12.4V. Then I start the engine, the dashcam powers on, voltage is all good. Then I turn it off, the voltage drops to below 11.4V temporarily, but long enought to confuse the dashcam so it powers off, then the voltage climbs back up within a minute.

What is causing that drop? I see the DRLs are on, I've tuned off any cabin lighting, turned off the welcome/leaving home functions but it still drops. Any tips?

Thank you

Well the obvious question would be, how old is the battery?

battery is about 1.5years old... so not too bad I'd say?

I would say its good then, but on the other hand, even a month old battery could be bad.. I presume the car starts normally, no issues there.. The drop after shutdown is wierd, not sure why that happens, should be constant, and what you said, after a minute car will go to "sleep" and thats why your voltage will climb.. Aby aftermarket parts on the car? Electric primary?

The Can network and all the Can controllers remaining in active mode while the courtesy lights, welcome home lights etc would be active, yes you have disabled them but the controllers are still active during that time, others for a lot longer like the lighting controller that will switch off the courtesy lights if the rear hatch or a door is left open more than 30 minutes.

A new battery will probably reduce the voltage drop, well it wont but it may have a higher cell voltage, but the Can network and controllers will still be active.

Thanks everyone for their responses. I will probably have to end up with the external battery from the same manufacturer that does the dashcam (due to the connector). This will resolve the problems.
