Thinking of buying Octavia mk4 - engine recommendations

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am looking for a new family estate and the new Octavia Combi is one of the options I am considering. I am choosing between 1,5 TSI (manual) and 1,5 TSI (m-HEV and DSG). Is the m-HEV variant really worth it if I don't mind the manual transmission? All my cars so far have been manual and this never bothered me. Also, how is the reliability of this generation Octavia? I see many software issues, but this doesn't bother me that much because I expect them to be resolved with updates eventually. Mechanical reliability and electronics is what I am mostly concerned with. I don't change my cars too often, so I am looking to keep the car for 10-15 years and I hope to not have to do any big/expensive repairs in that time if I service it accordingly in that time. Also, I wanted to consider the PHEV variant as well, but it doesn't seem like it will be available any time soon. I don't need new car that urgently, and I will need to wait anyway, so if the PHEV is really worth it I might wait for it to be available. What do you think?

Not sure if we can discuss other brands here, but the second option I have in mind is Toyota Corolla Touring Sports with the 2.0 hybrid engine. I think the Toyota is more reliable in general and they offer 10 years warranty, which is big plus for me, but the Skoda feels a bit more premium and maybe a bit better quiet inside. I have family in another European country (the home country of Skoda actually), so I am expected to make 1500 km trips and back once or twice per year. So, comfort over long highway drives is important to me as well and I think Octavia might have an edge there.

Welcome.

What country are you in?

Toyota are the ones with over a decades experience of self charge hybrids and have addressed and sorted issues promptly over the years and are not still messing about having snagging faults with hardware and software like Skoda are with mild hybrids, plug ins and even just pure ICE Mk4 Octavia.

I would definately choose the Toyota over a Skoda 👍

The Corolla hybrid is smooth and relaxing to drive with an excellent and clever power train, but with less luggage space than you'd expect .

The 1.8 hybrid is amazingly economical in the city, and reasonably quick. On the longer trips I don't think it'd be any more economical than a 1.5 TSI Skoda.

The 2.0 Corolla is considerably quicker than the 1.8, but less economical.

However, the greatest advantage of the Skoda is the much larger luggage compartment, as the Corolla keeps its battery underneath there. I also think the interior quality is nicer in the new Octavia.

You need to go and look and test drive them both and weigh up the pros and cons. They'd both serve you well, I'm sure. It all depends on what is most important to you.
