Brake pad warning light

Featured Replies

Is it possible to tell what pads need changing? Front or back? Without a physical inspection?

If it's back I can buy Carista BT adapter and have the free features for a month? This will allow me to put EPB in service mode?

Also would it be possible to close the boot from inside the car by making changes with Carista?

I have a Superb MK3 MY17 , cheers.

Only a physical inspection will show which sensor has triggered the warning you can't tell with diagnostic kit

Are not only the front pads monitored?

I dont recall ever changing rear pads with wear indicators, doesn't mean they dont exist though.

For cost saving only one side of the fronts carries a wear indicator on many vehicles these days.

Not unheard of to have one on right rear. My Polo does.

I don't have wiring info for Superb3, but latest of the Superb2 docs doesn't seem to have anything but front left.

Thanks both.

I'll start with the front and change them first if required.

I assume the dash light will disappear by itself?  And I should only need OBD if the backs need doing?

It's an L&K model if that makes a difference or not.

Cheers.

Yes, dash light should just go.

I'll report back what I find on the rears if I need to change them.

I’ve come across Merc A-class that had rear pad indicators iirc. Possibly some newer beemers too.

My Touareg has sensors on all 4 corners but other VAG have one front one rear on opposite corners

I just put my plate into Euro car parts and front pads mention "integrated" wear indicator but rear ones say "not fitted"

@Arseneknows Have you taken 10 minutes yet and had a look see at your brake pads front and rear to see how much wear there is on the pads.

All they get at a service is a visual inspection and then the Service Desk person is able to call the owner and say the discs are 80% worn and new pads and discs are needed.

When asked to ask the Technician what the actual measurement is funnily nobody knows and 80% meant 20 % of an unknown number.

According to maintenance manual, chapter 5.1, p124-125 (to be downloaded from cardiagn.com), the wear limit is 7mm thickness (incl. backing plate) for front pads and 7.6mm for rear pads.

Hi I took front passenger near side wheel off to start changing the pads. The pads don't look bad and this is the side that doesn't appear to have the wear indicator fitted.

Q. I have a caliper tool but it's too small for the piston, can someone advise what one I need and I will pop out to Halforda or Europart.

Also , does the piston need to turn as it goes back? I may as well change the pads I guess even if there appears to be half the material left on them.🤔

Front calipers don't need their pistons turning to retract. Big G-clamp or one of those trigger action woodwork clamps should do it rather than a dedicated tool? Even strong hands should do it on such a young car.

Pretty sure NSF should have a wear sensor on the inner pad? Is there a connector for one nearby?

Thanks I think I need this , I've bought one cheaply on eBay so it doesn't matter if it won't fit.

I didn't see any wiring on NSF but I will take a look on the OSF , maybe it's there?

Certainly worth a look. :)

I had a quick look now and yes OSF has the wiring. I actually plugged in the new pad and checked and the dash light went off just to test.

Light came back on when I plugged the old pads back in and started the car, pressed the brake.

I'll change the pads when I get the correct part for pushing the piston back. Cheers all.
