Brake pads and disks

Featured Replies

Hi there apologies if this has been asked a million times before

my brake light warning had come up on the dash.  On inspection of the pads I noticed that the disk on the rear has seen better days. I’ll replace the full set.
I have a 2017 vrs 4x4 dsg

euro car parts have a sale on so I’ll get the lot.  Which ones do I need? Is it just a case of measuring the disk diameters?

also on the pads do I need brake warning sensors?   Are they on both from and rears?

cheers in advance

I didn't know you could get an Octavia MK3 RS with four wheel drive. All the ones I've seen listed are two wheel drive.

What engine does it have, and is it the facelift model?

If it's the 2.0litre petrol 245PS, it will probably have the following brakes. Build code 1LG means 340mm front brakes, and build code 1KW means 310mm rear brakes. If your rear brake discs are ventilated, they will be the 310mm rear brakes as all the other rear brakes use solid rear brake discs.

Ahh. Get you.  It’s a facelift tdi with dsg.  Quite  nippy

If yours is the facelift it will have thr 312mm brakes and 272mm on the rears. The best place to buy them is from Autodoc. I got genuine TRW discs and pads both front and rear for £168 all in. That was for the larger 340mm discs aswell so the 312mm ones are cheaper.

Looking at this lot??

Should only be a sensor on the front pads.

I would recommend the trw from AUTODOC. Tried brembo from euros and they warped on me. Their pads also rattled in the carriers.

be prepared for the rear carrier bolts. Very little room to get at them and a high torque

TRW GDB1956 are the correct front brake pads for the 312mm front brake discs, not TRW GDB1984.

Many thanks.  Is that due to the sensor?

It's not just that TRW GDB1984 doesn't have a sensor, but TRW GDB1984 brake pads are far too small...as you can see from the specifications below.

TRW GDB1984

Height 54.7mm, Width 146mm, Thickness 19.5mm

That’s great.  I’ll get them on order. Many thanks

Timely thread this, my 184 DSG Scout had a service at Skoda yesterday, the report recommended the front discs and pads were not far off being shot.

They offered to do them for £444 (just the fronts remember…).

He genuinely looked shocked when I declined and said I’d do them myself…

HAha these guys are crazy.

I just did mine on the same car. Bought front ATE solid discs and front+rear ATE Ceramic break pads for about £180.

BTW the wear sensor is only one for an axle, right? Or I lost one 😅

I had to get original VAG pads. Anything else just rattled in the calipers.

The Octavia MK3 312mm front brakes and 272mm rear brakes are both TRW brake systems.

If you use TRW aftermarket brake pads for both these TRW brake systems, they should fit just like the originals.

VAG don't manufacture brake parts. They buy them from places like ATE and TRW depending on what brake system is being used on that particular car.

You can often get different front and rear brake systems on the same car. For example, you might get an ATE front brake system and a TRW rear brake system, or vice-versa.

As far as the rattling goes, why not compare the new brake pads with the old ones that you have just taken off before fitting the new ones. If the new ones are loose enough to rattle, I would have thought that it would be easy enough to spot the difference in size before fitting them. Maybe use the help of digital calipers, or put them back to back and look around the edges for any dimensional differences.

  • 3 weeks later...

Loads of fake Brembo stuff on the web, I've currently got Brembo Max front discs in 312mm size & Brembo plain rear discs....& plain Brembo pads...no rattling & all ok..

For the 288mm & 312mm front discs

The front caliper big bolts are very high torque:-

Big bolts 200Nm (148lbft), can be reused just clean thoroughly!
Calliper pin 35Nm (26lbft) (always renew or thoroughly clean & use blue threadloc if ok)
Splash shield 12Nm (9lbft)
ABS sensor & brake disc screw 8Nm (6lbft)

Also do NOT use copper grease or ceramic type greases on pad backs or the slide pins....they are all wrong & will eventually cause the caliper/pads to stick...been there done that..

Best stuff for the slide pins (area inside the slide pin rubber boots/gators) is the TRW stuff "PFG110"...

& for the pad ears/back contact areas with the calipers you need to use either VW hot bolt paste, or what I use is Loctite LB8009 heavy duty....very high temp, low wash out, no metal content...& will not calcify like the ceramic ones..

For the rears, you need a special very short hex allen key head...I used this laser tools set when torqueing up...    You may not as your cars have the manual handbrake & the slide pins on the calipers are different

What did you need a hex head for? On my Vrs tdi rear brakes there are none. Might be a bit of a red herring for the op. M14 spline needed for the rear carriers, 17mm and 13mm spanner for callipers and piston wind back tool

"****".....edited, ........forgot that your cars have slightly different rear caliper slide pins due to being manual handbrakes & not electronic...
