New panoramic roof, or not??

Featured Replies

Hi all, I’m after some advice please.

So, had my Kamiq MC for about 2 months and after a week or two noticed that the spare wheel well had about 1/2 inch of clear odourless water in it.  I syringed it all out and dried it up and kind of wondered whether it was after washing it a few days beforehand and perhaps not fully shutting the tailgate.

The next time it rained I again checked the boot and found another shallow puddle of water, so obviously I knew I had a leak somewhere, great.

The Service Manager at my nearest main dealer collected my car a few days ago to investigate, and after carrying out water tests confirmed that I did indeed have a leak.  He had to order a longer endoscope as the one they had wasn’t long enough.  He called after a couple of days and told me that the leak was coming from the pano roof and the water finding its way down the bodywork and into the spare wheel well.  Nothing inside the car is damp/wet, the carpets, seats and headlining is bone dry.

This is the part I’d like advice about.  He told me that he has had to order a brand new pano roof from the factory in Czech, which will take about 10 days plus to arrive.  A new roof??  As far as I can tell the roof on my car has zero damage and he didn’t mention to me that the leak was down to any damage either.  I just put it down to it not having been bonded properly at the factory when it was built, so in my ignorant head I’m thinking that it can just be re bonded??

Im more than concerned about my car having to be stripped of its headliner and whatever else it may involve, just to replace an undamaged pano roof with a new one.

Am I missing something here?  I didn’t ask the question when he called me and I tried speaking to him today but he wasn’t in. He’s going to call me tomorrow so I will ask him then.  But, why would they need to replace a whole roof when as far as I’m assuming the leak is only down to a section that hasn’t been bonded properly??

Please, can anyone offer any advice and/or words of wisdom.

Thank you.

If it is being done under warranty I wouldn't mind whether it was replaced or the old one refitted. The issue is, what happens if you take the car in, they take out the sunroof, the roof is faulty and they don't have a replacement to hand.

Thanks for your reply.

Well, the service manager called me

today and explained that despite there being no physical damage to the pano roof, Skoda have instructed that if it has to be removed (which it would do if they just re bonded it) then a whole new roof is required.  Ok, fair enough, I guess I’m just concerned about any damage that might occur with the removing and replacing the roof.  The headlining has to be removed, the electric sun blind has to be removed and anything else that might need to be removed.  I told the service manager that I will be going over the whole car with a fine toothed comb once it’s done, as previous experience with other warranty work and/or repairs has left me pretty cynical of dealer “technicians”.

Let’s see.

Must be a known fault if they are doing this without question.  I’m thoughtful of mine leaking having read a few reports.  I know not to use a power wash on the roof.  After reading this I did go out and check my boot and no leaks.

That did cross my mind too.  The word “warranty” has not even been muttered by the service manager, he just confirmed that it leaks and proceeded to tell me that he had ordered a new roof from the factory.  That’s it, the “w” word not mentioned.

For what it’s worth I had a Tiguan with similar problem and needing new pano roof. I was concerned as you are about damage etc. but it was absolutely spotless with no sign of the work done. It will of course depend on the capabilities of the fitter.

Yeah I get that, and the service manager has given me his word that it’ll be fine.  Appreciate your reply buddy.

Just thinking aloud. After reading your comment, my first thought was how many owners would have come to the forum complaining why Skoda were re-using an old part rather than replacing the whole roof. I can hear them now - blaming Skoda for being stingy. :D       It's a funny old world.

If you're after re-assurance -   Let's assume there is no fault with the current roof and all it needs is rebonding. Well to do that they'd still have to take the roof off, remove all the old bonding, clean it up and re-bond it - so you liner etc would still need to have come off.

There may well not be an issue with the roof but I suspect it'll be cheaper for Skoda to replace it altogether than go to all the bother of cleaning up the current roof. Just imagine they took it off, cleaned it up and then found the leak still existed. I'd defo be going with a whole new roof.

There used to be a problem with the drainage plugs in VW group sunroofs but your vehicle is far to new for that to be the likely cause. Defo sounds like the roof wasn't bonded properly.

I know mate and In my ignorant head I just wondered why they’d go to the expense of a brand new roof when the existing one is perfectly ok, but the service manager has explained that either way it has to be removed, hence why Skoda are saying it needs a brand new one.

Now that it has been explained to me I can kinda see it, still a ball ache though.

If it’s the same type of sunroof fitted to the Yeti then leaks were a common problem - in fact there seems to be a problem with many VAG cars fitted with sunroofs. I am sure improvements are being made but in 60 years of motoring I have learnt that sooner or later sunroofs leak!  That’s why I gave up on sunroofs when A/C became standard. Fingers crossed the repair works and you are okay for the future.

I do like the Panoramic roof, quite nice to slide it back.  Not so keen at night, no idea why, and my daughter hates it open at anytime, makes her feel sick.
