Small accident (rear bumper spoiler?)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

hope you are all doing great. I hope someone can give me a tip here...

I had a small accident few days back, I thought I was at the end of the road of the hill, but I obviously not. I turned, and basically scratched the bottom left part of this plasticky rear bumper, and it became dislodged.

It does not seem broken, I've tried to push it into place, but I am failing at that. Also tried searching for some videos, but haven't found anyone fixing that 2nd half of the rear bumper, other than people taking out the rear bumper as one.

Any clue what I can do? I'd really like to avoid to visit the mechanic...

Thank you

Maybe a strong push is the key, if the clips are not broken or bent

Might be a 2 man job, but you need to manipulate the popped out bit so that all of the clips line up. Then give it some hefty slaps and it should all pop back in. notice how the clip in the corner is tapered, its a guide.

You need to get it nearly there then be short and sharp with the last bit.

I would suggest taking the reflector out first and then try refitting the bumper part as you may find the reflector is obstructing the clips

Very hard to tell without physically seeing it, but if the bumper had been caught on something, then I'd have expected the bottom to be dislodged - your pics show it to be the top. The plastic clips on the top also look scratched?  If I were to take a guess I'd say something has sheared off - you may be looking at a whole new bumper.

Point the damaged area so it's in sunlight on a hot day to get the whole area nice and warm, then try again.

It'll be easier to flex the plastic into place when it's warm and there's less risk of breaking anything.

A small detail I think I can see in the first picture - in the left-hand corner, just under the outer edge of the reflector - is there a break in the substrate moulding?

Hi guys,

thank you all for your replies. To update you, yesterday I was taking a better look at the whole thing, and I think there is no way around me not going to the mechanic to fix it.

So my understanding from what I see is that the bottom more plasticky piece has some sort of rectangular shaped pieces that are supposed to "click" with a more hardened plastic bumps. What I am seeing is that when the whole thing came apart when I went over the bump at the bottom of the hill, is that all those areas where is it supposed to "click" are gone.

Most likely, by it being violently removed, they were destroyed... which is really unfortunate. Basically, half of the lower rear bumper is unhinged from the top part, but it cannot click because those "bumps" are half gone.

Honestly, I don't know if this is a good design or not. Perhaps if the bumps that it clicks too were harder, I could've just put it back. Or perhaps the whole rear bumper would have been completely destroyed.

All in all, it looks like I need a full replacement of the rear bumper. I am not sure how much that is going to go for, but hopefully it is under 1.5k...

Again, thanks everyone!

Nothing wrong with the design.  You can have a plastic bumper and you can have a violent removal, but you can't have both and hope everything will be OK.

Under the car there are two screws either side holding the lower bumper in place. If you remove these, you then have more flexibility to realign the bumper. Once popped back, refix the screws.

Am I the only one not to see the original posters pictures instead seeing a message that the content is not viewable in your region, the UK. Crank up the VPN and refresh the page and all there. No doubt a result of the on line safety bill as we must protect people from viewing car p##n. I belong to a coffee forum and all our pictures disappeared there, disturbing pictures of coffee machines.
