Excessive ABS, low speeds?

Hi all,

Just drove to work this morning in some rain. Noticed going through the lanes that any sort of braking would result in excessive ABS even at low speeds. I had to brake harshly at 20-25mph as someone bombed around the corner, and all my car did was excessively engage ABS to the point as if it felt the car was not going to come to a stop. It felt as if I had next to no brakes. So outside work I hit the brakes harsh at say 15 to 20 mph, if that, and again excessive ABS feedback. Could this possibly be a one off or does it warrant further investigating? I'm in work for the next 24hrs so won't get the chance to give the car another drive and do further investigating until tomorrow.

DId you manage to solve this problem ? I have same issue with same car, ABS is activating on low speed.

ABS intervention is not speed dependent.

What can be the issue than? No errors in ABS, sensors are reading speed correctly. Tyres is few months old michelin pilot sport.

I believe that what JR is saying is ABS will intervene any time the brakes are applied hard to reduce risk of control loss through wheel locking.

No matter what speed, the vehicle could be travelling in slippery conditions, which could lead to loss of control through hard brake application without intervention.

I've had full ABS mode operate a couple of times at around 10 to 15 MPH when front assist has detected a possible collision risk.

As above and in snow and ice and other road or tyre to road conditions ABS can increase the braking distance which will make things feel different. Can you get live recorded data from when you have excessive ABS at low speeds to see hat else is going on on other modules and systems, are you able to see around the physical area for anything that might mess with the poor dumb miniscule ABS and car brain and the system.

The real thing to ask though is why the brake pedal is being pressed so hard to bring about these ABS interventions?

Unless driving too fast for the existing conditions, encountering unusually slick road conditions (diesel spill, ice, etc) or being suddenly presented with an unexpected hazard, it should not be necessary to press the brake pedal so hard that ABS is triggered.

Hello,

I subsequently replaced my front brake calipers. However, I would caution this did little - the stopping power are not good on the Fabia MK3's and drove four other variations with the same results.

I have subsequently switched to slotted / drilled brake rotors which have had better results. Not being as heavy footed and applying progressive brake effort as opposed to instant has also helped drastically.

My car has never failed an MOT on brake related matters, so I wonder in hindsight if my complaint was having too high expectations.

Kind regards,

I often complain about the quality of VW's products but I have never noticed the brakes on my wife's 2015 Fabia Mk3 having any faults (other than an occasional intermittent trill). So it makes me wonder what might be wrong with the brakes on your car or your driving or as you put your expectations.

What are your tyres like (forget tread depth) are they old, low quality, mismatched. How are you driving to find the brakes wanting. Is your car fully loaded with weight and you go down long steep slopes, hills, mountains. Are you discs, pads, drums, shoes, lower quality makes or examples.

Slotted and drilled discs are often the fashion choice for the more spirited how much the slots and drills actually add to average normal use road driving over swapping from worn to new brake parts is a different matter, those that use their Fabias for track use will know more for their track use.

The standard brakes seem to most to be reasonable on factory standard Fabias, I've seen moans about more regular work to rear drum brakes but can't remember if those moans relate to the Mk3 Fabia.

For modified Fabias their will probably be information about brakes in the 'Performance & Tuning Upgrades' and 'Fabia Projects' forums.
