Power steering light is on

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

I have a 2007 MK1 1.9tdi pd estate.

My power steering light is on and I have lost total steering assist.

I have done following checks.

Battery is showing healthy 14.3 volts when engine running on idle with headlights and stereo, heating on.

There are no power steering fluid leaks.

Power steering fluid reservoir is also full as it should be.

Is there anyone local to me that could help me reading the error codes with a VCD. I have a feeling it's steering angle sensor. But want to be sure.

Any advice or suggestions are most welcome.

Thanks in advance.

Have you checked cabin fuse number 7 (5 Amp)?

And strip fuse number 5 (50 amp) above the battery?

For the price of about 10 litres of diesel you could equip yourself with the necessary KKL cable and download freeware VCDS Lite, if you have a windows laptop.

Hi, thanks for replying.

I watched a video on you tube where this guy checked those fuses above the battery and gave them a clean.

I did the same and the light has gone for now and steering assist is back.

I am not sure if that's a temporary fix or what ? But time will tell.

Could you kindly send me a link for those cables on eBay etc. And link for the software?

Kind regards

Yogi

Anything else I can do for you today. 😘

Hi ,

How are you?

Light came back and on close inspection, I noticed that the second fuse from the right hand side is split right from the middle. I am sure it's not meant to ?? Can you please confirm and if I need to replace it - what amp/volt I am looking for because there is nothing on it that I can read but the one next to it says 20v.

Thanks . Please see the picture.

That's your problem, move the unused one that's next to it (no wire) into its place, checking that it says 50 on it somewhere, it looks the same width at its narrowest point so probably same value.

Edit, or just undo the one nut and move the wire across onto number 6 if it'll reach, that should be easier.

Thanks

The one on the right says 20 on it not 50

Does the broken one say 50 anywhere? Check with both halves removed, both side.

Just move the wire across and try it. It'll be fine.

Thanks.

Yes, I bought this pack and replaced my blown 50A fuse .

Fingers crossed - so far so good.

But why did my old fuse blow.

Was it wear and tear and or old age.

Or should I investigate further?

Kind regards

Yogi

It doesn't look like it 'blew' as such. It's a common thing for them to simply crack due to age. It's nothing to worry about.

Many many thanks to Pete and Lee and everyone else. I replaced the fuse and it has been ok since. I bought the pack from Halfords as recommended here.

Kind regards
