It never rains Dept

Featured Replies

The garage fixing my master cylinder provided a Brucie Bonus today - after 50+ limp mode activations and crossing Rose Hill, Lickey at 20mph - I took a look under the bonnet and found this;

PLEASE tell me this a cheap fix?

No idea what I’m looking at, but it shouldn’t cost a million quid. What is it?

Got any adhesive-lined heatshrink sleeving that'll fit over that pipe?

Pipes coming off the vacuum pump

Not much for heatshrink to grip onto, the stub has broken off inside the flexible hose.

I would drill both parts out enough to insert a piece of copper brake or fuel line, whatever I had to hand of a suitable diameter and bore, loctite the pipe into both pieces then reinforce the outside with 2 pack epoxy putty or Sikaflex moulding it to shape & into position with wet fingers once it starts to harden.

Did they manage to fix your master cylinder?

A mechanic pals catchphrase was "if we cant fix it we'll f**k it!"

I hope your brake pedal doesn't drop to the floor again.

@J.R. Master cylinder fixed thanks, traction is MUCH better so I wonder if it's been weeping for a while.

It must have been snapped by a tech with a large gut whilst reaching down the back of the engine - annoying as the loss of vacuum causes limp mode at just about every gear change.

In the short term I think I'm going to see if a fuel pipe T piece will fit, hopefully I can get Amazon to deliver so I don't have to risk life and limb on the fast roads.

The part number for the assembly (you can't just buy the broken bit) is 1K0 612 041 HQ if anyone's interested, a mere £42.20 inc VAT.

Now fixed at the Garage's expense, but turbo boost and braking feel very different - does there need to be some calibration?

Or should I just disconnect the battery overnight?

So it should have been.

Can you elaborate a bit more about how it actually feels?  You previously mentioned braking was improved, how has it changed?  Also what about the turbo boost, can you explain in more detail?

Best wait a little about the battery disconnect.

I assume that you are comparing to before the clutch job, its possible that the connector was already cracked and leaking some air, now the vacuum operated systems are working as they should.

Unless you mean you have a higher brake pedal force and less engine power.

@J.R. @varooom Thanks for replying.

The braking works fine but it feels absolutely dead, no feel at the pedal at all and quite difficult to be smooth.

Engine revs around to 4k without any issue, but there doesn't feel like there's any step in power.

With zero vacuum the engine was very torquey to 1500rpm, then flat.
