Removing marble

Featured Replies

Perhaps a long shot but thought I’d ask.
My son dropped a marble in the car and I believe it’s rolled somewhere under the drivers seat. The sound sounds like it’s just behind the drivers seat.
I’ve looked under the seats but cannot find the marble. Judging from the sound it’s rolling on hard plastic. Perhaps some kind of tray under the seats?

There are a few vent holes so perhaps it’s rolled into the hole.
I will have to have an empty car park and ask the wife to drive whilst I sit in the rear to try to pin point the exact location.
Just wondering if by any chance someone here had same issue?
From initial glance I would need to remove the seats, trims and carpet to access whatever is under the driver seat area.
This looks like a lot of work and would want some advice for the best method to tackle this.
Sound of the marble rolling around is really annoying :)

Fact, sounds often appear to be from a certain location, but often a totally different area.

It could have gone down the seatbelt plug area in back seat for example.

Me being me, I'd start bashing with my hand on various trims/carpets with hopes of hearing a little tinkle and then try an pinpoint it bit by bit.

Many threads on here for same issues of locating dropped thing's.

Cheers. I will try to have a look near the seat belt plug area. The rolling sounds like it’s on hard plastic. Checked all door pockets but no joy.
Can only hear the sound when car is in motion so far but will try knocking on various trims :)

My first place to look would be the rear heater vent under the seat as they are pretty exposed   if it is there I'd get some vent grilles for the sake of a few quid...   I bought some before I even had the car.

Yes I did buy some but they keep coming off.
Any good recommendations?

also looks to be pain if it’s dropped inside. Lots of trim and carpet to remove.

Probably best to report back once you have had a ride in empty car park whilst sat in rear.

Sit on all 3 rear seats to try and get a "fix" on a rough location, then I'd be getting down in there close proximity once you have a rough idea.  Then try to feel or listen for a better location.

Worry about trim removal once you think you have it sussed out as to where it could be.

Popcorn to the ready.

+1 for the rear footwell vents, I had a small stone drop into one of mine, took me a while to find what it was rattling around, but in the end a very strong vacuum cleaner got it out.

I now also have the aftermarket covers fitted.

So after extensive listening by 3 independent witness it’s confirmed that the sound of the marble rolling is coming from behind the driver seat, under the rear passenger footwell. Educated guess would indicate the marble went through the vents under the driver seat.
Would it be possible to remove? Had quick prod around and the bit under the vents looks  sealed.
Stumble across similar issue with stones on another forum and there were 2 solutions offered:

1) Drill 38mm hole(!!!) and fish it out with a stick with sticky viyd

 2) Fairy liquid through vents so the stone sticks and stops making noise.

Don’t fancy both options to be honest …

Here is the official way, could be a few hours work if you don't wish to drill things or have the car smelling of fairy.

Most excellent! Many thanks for this, greatly appreciated.

I might have a go when I have some time. At least it looks like there should be a method of removing said marble, just a little effort required.

edit: when it says “remove centre console” does it mean the whole console or just the transmission? Removing the entire centre console sounds a bit … difficult

Yeah this is not the "full" process, 1st image for overview, 2nd a little closer to subject.

But missing some pages for the entire process.

So now at least you have a choice 3 (DIY) to add to your list, and you will have to let us know which one you go with.

Have to speak up if you need some additional details if you decide to tackle it.

Choice 4 is a garage visit and open wallet surgery.

Might consider vacuum before attempting to removing trims.

The sound sounds like it’s coming from a small flat plastic tray underneath the driver side rear passenger seat.
I cannot really tell from pictures as it only shows the vents, however is there such void where the vents lead to?

Try these images, see if they make any sense to you, this one seems to head to the rear vents

Sorry for lack of replies, been busy few weeks.
Finally had some time for a proper inspection, and I don’t think the marble went into the vents under the seat as they are leading upwards.

I do notice however there is a wiring loom near the right side of seats that has ducting that leads to the floor pan. The sound is definitely coming from just under the driver seat, sounds like it’s rolling between the sill area (front and back).

@varooom: Do you happen to have any diagrams for this wiring loom and perhaps what it leads to?

Next step is to remove seats and carpets to see if there are any chance of reaching the said marble. Does anyone know if I need to disconnect batteries if removing seats please?

I have found this for RHD driver seat, there are other modules in and around this area, but locating correct loom is never easy to trace.

This shows you more of the cable bundles, but maybe ducts follow the route.

There is no mention of disconnection of battery to remove seats, just unplugging the electical connectors.

Wow, that’s very helpful thanks so much for the quick reply.
I will just unplug the connectors as advised as disconnecting battery might cause other issues.
That picture is what I need cheers. Looks like there is a floor pan under the driver seat. Is there something similar for rear seat behind driver seat please?

Sound is definitely coming from around that area. A bit flabbergasted as to how it got in there but definitely suspect through the channel of the wiring loom.

Some more pictures that might assist.

I think this might be in rear of vehicle, but might not be, also optional equipment choice.

Hard to make out the location in my head exactly.

You should have a small part of the loom not pictured heading to the fuel tank under the seat, if I can find an image I will post it.

Cheers. The floor pan in the second pic is most likely where the marble ended up, perhaps via a duct in the first pic. This is definitely very helpful, cheers!

Hopefully not too challenging removing seats, trim and carpet to access the area.

p/s: on the first pic, do you happen to have a diagram of where the downward cable leads to? Hopefully it’s a floor pan that looks similar to the second pic.

With the seats unplugged, don't switch the ignition ON or you set a fault code in the airbag system and that'll need the correct kit to turn off the airbag warning light

I believe that 2nd picture is the one you are talking about.

It's same location rotated as far as I can see (look at the weird hump)

@varoom : do you know how to remove this lever please? Seems tightly screwed in.
Found the ball it’s in the middle section of the vent so need to remove carpets and trims.
Any instructions appreciated :)

Try this process, should work, have to let me know if it doesn't.
