I'm a little behind with this but it might be of interest to some people. The diagonal impact beam is probably used because it effectively turns the rectangualr door into two triangles. Anyone who has played with meccano might remember that the triangle is the only shape that once made can't be stretched or squahsed and in fact it is the strongest shape in nature. Squares and rectangles can be easily turned into rhombus and parallelorgrams.
