Now this is odd (MK5 Golf)

Featured Replies

Some of you will know how you traditionally change window regulators etc in car doors. Remove the door trim, anclileries carrier etc and out it comes.

Not on the Mk5

Different way of doing it. You unbolt the door skin and get it from the other way...lol.

Stops water leaks I guess.

Looks like a damn site easier to work on too... is it?

Chris

There does not seem to be any side impact bars on the Mk5 ?

??

What about the chuffing great diagonal bar?

Eaiser? Yeah it is but its delicate work so you dont damage the paint etc.

DUnno i'd rather have two pieces of tubular steel tbh :P

You aint got that inside your door.

I prefer the idea of the diagonal - will help the door hold it's shape better in the event of a frontal impact... :)

Can imagine finding somewhere safe to put all the door skins in some of the workshops I've seen could be interesting!

I found it best to put it in the boot whist working on the car.

Having it this way round should also help in replacing accident damaged panels, just spray a replacement and bolt on.

To be honest after seeing what was inside the door of the 306 i was driving after i got hit directly in the side door, and saw the broken bars then I just want it to be f**king chunky.

Whats in the octy I then Ross? Is it a similar arangement?

One horizontal bar, about mid way up, can set it just there..

The guy who replaced my wiper linkage said the new golf is a peach to work on. He called the MKIV and I quote "a tester for the MKV" i.e. the stuff they got wrong on the MKIV they seem to have resolved on the MKV. Is this true Ross????

Ok, Yes I'd rather have whats in the MK II than the MK I then.

The 306 had a huge bar in it and i was relieved to have got out alive when i saw how broken it was :(

the side impact bar from the photo looks like it is pressed body work sheet metal, I would guess it is not but from the photo looks that way.

True in some respects, the next model is usually a progression from the previous one. However why are we now taking loads of gearboxes out to change flywheels? Never did that on the MK4 (or at least not that often), they changed something, be it a design, supplier whatever.

Nice well thought out bit of design that.

diesel or petrol engine gearboxes ? just interested

Diesel twin mass flywheels. Big recall at the moment.

seems sensible..this way you dont end up with loose or damaged door trim...

IIRC when the MkV Golf came out a lot of the reviews indicated that the quality of plastics etc are not up to the previous MkIV. The dashboard plastics arn't great I know that and not a patch on the OctyII either.

I helped a colleague with a Mk IV Golf to replace one of his front light units today. Had to take the whole grille and front bumper off. Nightmare :(

Same as most of them tbh, inc the TT ;)

Octavia 2 is nice and easy though.
