Changing Manual Air conditioning to have Climate control?

Featured Replies

First off I’ll start by saying im probably the least car savvy guy ever I know very little & secondly I’ve put a deposit down on a skoda fabia Monte Carlo 2017 which comes with standard manual air conditioning although the thing is I’ve saw some models with climate control, so would it be possible for me to get a garage to replace the manual AC with climate?

also if it’s possible what’s the average asking price for such a task?

don’t know if that was enough details to include neither, if it’s not let me know in comments I’ll try answering

This question or project has been asked many times in the past, on the surface it looks easy and cheap to do, but don't be fooled, this would be possible, but at a high price.

Technically yes, but it will cost £Lots.

Are we speaking under 2k roughly or way higher? That’s the price I had in mind

Probably doable for less than that, but not worth it. There simply aren't any significant benefits.

I wouldn't want it if someone were to do it for nothing.

So easy to chose the temperature you want inside the car and wait for the interior to get to it and if you want to increase or decrease it then just do that.

It Really that bad? Thought it modernised it a bit more plus would save me messing about with manual every other day

Welcome to the forum.

Where ever you are in Scotland you will be adjusting it even if you have climate control.

You will be increasing the fan speed to demist the screen. You will be needing AC on almost always to save from misting up and come winter if the AC is off because too cold outside you will be playing about clearing ice that has formed inside.

The Systems fitted in a Skoda Fabia 2022 is no better than it was in 2017 or even 2008.

KISS is just fine.

You'd probably find yourself asking it the other way round if you did throw a bunch of money at 'shiny shiny'.

"What was wrong with the manual system, this one just seems to do whatever it feels like, not what I want"

Damn well that’s quickly changed my mind thanks for the quick responses.

Since you guys are all about your skodas/cars what would be the better thing to the spend money on the car? For convenience preferably

@colzoh

Enjoy the car.

?

Who are you buying it from?

Be sure the car is well serviced.

It might need new spark plugs by now if it has not had them, the Pollen filter should have been changed in the past 2 years, check it to see if clean.

Check the Air Filter, change if needed.

Check the tyre pressures and reset the TPMS even if you do not change the tyre pressures.

.......................

An idea of recommendations for servicing and maintenance that you get from Skoda.

From arnold Clark down in Birtley it’s going through a service right now fixing curbed wheels looks like it’s recently had its MOT too so should get it up here in Scotland by next week was getting told

They we’re doing a deal on 3 free years of servicing and MoT so hopefully they’d cover most of that picture, I saved that photo for future reference

OK.

?

Have you agreed to pay extra for a 3 year Serving deal and a longer Warranty?

Get that Servicing for 3 years set out writing.

What are they doing, Oil & Filter, pollen filter at 2 years, brake fluid at 2 years, etc.   Doubt it!

I bought a used car from AC Ayr with 2 years servicing and 2 MOTS.

A gesture included in the purchase price at no extra cost as i was walking out the door and not 'signing on the day'.   Ye right!

1 Year later and after 3,000 miles they failed it at the MOT on the broken spring and brakes that it had failed on before i bought it and that they then passed.

The Service was an Oil & Filter service and they wanted me to pay for the Brake Fluid change that was not done when they had fitted the new brakes that was part of getting the MOT pass.

*It never went in at year 2 and they got no money  when i collected the car at the 1st service for the spring or discs for them  trying it on as they were cheeky barstewards who had the spring and discs in the Recycle skip within 15 mins of phoning me to tell me the car i had dropped off had failed on the spring and brakes.*

So the Service & MOT Vouchers T&C's needs reading.  It is nice they give you it free, except it is not Free it is on the cars paperwork as part of their costs.

Actually reducing the cars price would be a better deal than this kidology.

Yeah just paid extra for it, now again questioning if that was wise never dealt with AC before, so now I can look forward to fake free MoT and servicing class

PS

How many miles has the car done?

Are they doing the cam belt now or has it been changed?

40k miles and he mentioned it on the brief phone call like I says i’m pretty useless with cars so whatever he said about it it’s went in one ear out the other

Cruise control; just the basic one that holds a set speed until you brake or accelerate.

A bit annoying needing/choosing to deal with Uncle Arnie's Car Emporiums.

My older daughter bought a new pre reg'd SEAT Leon Cupra from them, a bargain price without a trade in it has to be said, she bought, maybe on my suggestion, a 3 year service plan, mainly as the car was warranted by SEAT for most of that period, it turns out she was sold Uncle Arnie's version of a service plan, but so far so good, last service deferred my her for a fortnight due to Covid - crap happens, his stupid website directed her to a local workshop that was not SEAT certified, I thought that was daft during warranty, anyway she included a few things that needed warranty attention while it was in. When she collected, which was sort of still during the last lockdown/restrictions, when she asked about the warranty work she was told that they don't have any VW Group diagnostic equipment so nothing was looked at, oh well.

Younger daughter and her husband bought a use SEAT Arona down South and don't know much about cars, so I thought that I'd be helpful and organise buying a new security wheel bolt cover, a very easy thing to do, okay ebay sells them, but if I was also going to request a copy of "CAR DATA", I thought that I might as well just buy a bolt cover in person and while at the SEAT dealership, ask for a copy of "CAR DATA".  So, I phoned SEAT Broxburn, got through to the parts department, and told the guy what I needed and gave his the proper VW Group part number - " oh we can't use that number our system uses a different way of working" WTF? anyway after I handed over the car reg number, he said that car did not have these bolt caps - I suggested that SEAT also or later changed that plan to fit 5 covers to each wheel to a 5 legged starfish centre wheel cover conbo, he said  "yes but that is grayed out" so why can't he see what I needed as the correct alternative?  Anyway, I terminated the call there and then as it sounded a lot like when I went out to collect any parts that he managed to get for me, "CAR DATA" request would be double dutch!  Ebay worked for a "wheel set" of covers for that car though.

Another AC moan, this time issue caused by AC Liverpool, my older daughter bought a used and as it turned out ex AC lease 2001 Ibiza, it was okay, it was delivered up to Edinburgh by AC as that branch had sold it, or for some other reason, anyway it came complete with -ve camber at one side and no or +ve camber on the other side, it had been subjected t many "strict" pre sale checks - and they missed that, cost me good money to sort that out! Then, a year when I replaced the front brake pads, I could not fit new pads into one side of one calliper - reason being, AC Liverpool had replaced the discs and fitted the correct version on one side and an earlier version on the other side so the "top hat" or "height" was wrong for that brake set up, I'd always intend to avoid dealing with AC if at all possible, the exception being when buying a new car - though maybe even then you could end up with a lemon that was being passed around the dealers, when you are working with AC.

AC haters used to have a website but that got closed down, it was sad or even amusing to go onto it!

Edit:- AC and maybe others, do seem to like to lure you into putting down a deposit on a car that is many miles away and with no chance that you will ever eye ball it before you go to collect it - a very crafty plan - no?

One other thing that you could scatter your car cash on, as you live up in Scotland, is a set of winter wheels and tyres, so that your nice Monte alloys retain some of their initial beauty, and fit either all season or dedicated winter tyres - but that might only work if you live in a "nasty winters" areas are commute through one.  Doing that has always worked for me and my wife while we were still of working age, less so now as both car's tyres will get binned as they are now too old and not due to normal wear!! Quality winter tyres can last 25>30K miles if only used for 6 months/6K miles a year.

@rum4mo Anything "greyed out" just means that it wasn't fitted to the car from factory.  It can mean it was never meant to fit, but odds are the person didn't want the hassle of selling something that might not fit.

TPS are you best bet, as they use the software all day long, and if lucky with who you encounter, they will more than happily sell you what was needed.

Sake I can’t wait to have an AC horror story to tell 3 years down the line I feel left out, that sucks that happened to you Is there any happy endings with AC or is it just a mainstream scam company?

Oh yes I know that, but why he could not spot the part I needed seemed a bit strange.

I've never ever tried to use TPS as I know that they are not meant to deal with Jo Public, so I don't want to waste their time.

90% of the time that I phone up for parts to get ordered in, I deliberately avoid giving any car details, just the part numbers, doing that leaves me responsible for any errors, and that works for me.

Edit:- that was a reply to @varooom.

I am sure you do know your way around the codes, it was to basically say the dealers can be very hit and miss, TPS tends to be best bet I've found, normally quite friendly and accommodating to fitting part's that are greyed out.  I've walked into TPS many times, a sale is a sale.  I guess they don't generally sell to "public" but I was operating a business, so they didn't bat an eye lid.... definitely one to try next time.

AC is a reg'd car dealer so should always be safe to use, just be on your toes and keep what has been written in mind, when my older daughter used to hand her previous car,  a late 2009 Ibiza into her local SEAT branch of AC she always had no trouble so really it will be down to the local workshop for or if they are good and the sales people, if they are being honest.  Our first contact with AC was back in 2004, and that daughter fancied getting a small Citroen - the showroom was quiet but the sales guy, an Irish sounding man, would not deal with her while we were around, and that started alarm bells ringing in my head and her's so he lost a possible sale - the phrase "dogs and new tricks" comes to mind, and seems in many cases to be true.
