...Yet another servicing query.

Featured Replies

Long story short, my '67 Plate Superb is booked in for its cam belt & water pump With Bristol Street Skoda, Derby to the tune of £600. It's 5 years old so understand it needs to be done. Last year in September I opted for a Major Service with them, at around 47,000 miles. The DSG  gearbox oil was done in March '21, also with them.

They're now quoting me £245 for a service (extended scope) as well as £65 for a brake fluid change, however with the car only having only done 6.5k miles since the last service, surely it only needs an interim service?

Surely I could just take it to an independent and have an interim service and brake fluid change done for a fraction of the cost?

Its hard to say what would of been done in a major service as its more of a marketing gimmic now.

You only get a oil service and an inspection service. Everything else has recommended intervals varying from 10k/12 months to 80k/8 years.

What was actually done during this major service and just make sure they arent redoing it basically.

If you want an Oil & Filter service annually or between Variable / Flexible services then get that.

If you want to change a Pollen filter yourself for under £20 then do that.

If you want the Brake Fluid tested for H20 then get that and do not change it @ 3 year then each 2.

If you want Servicing & Maintenance and brakes serviced then maybe find a good Independent.

It is now August 08th; Services tend to be every N miles or M months, whichever is sooner. As you haven't stated the date for the pending service it could well be in scope by the date BSS will take the car in.

08/09. service indicator saying 27 days for service I believe.

According to the itemised receipt, they completed an oil change, replaced fuel, air and pollen filters, and completed a load of visual checks.

This year have it set to variable / flexible servicing so 18,000-20,000 miles / 24 months then you get it serviced annually or when ever you want.

They are putting it on fixed so 365-372 days / 9,4000 miles.  No need to have it set at that, it gets Long Life oil at the service.

PS

All about the visual checks, ticking boxes.   Did you pay a crazy £35 for a Pollen Filter & £70 for a fuel filter?

If thats the case then a brake fluid change may be due. The £245 service you have been quoted is simply an oil and filter as well as lots of 'expensive' visual checks which generally are the same checks they do on all the services.

The Manufacturers Recommendation / Guidelines is the Brake Fluid changed at 3 years and then each 2 years so the 2nd Brake Fluid change is due.

Maybe the first was not done.  An Independent might well use a Brake Fluid Tester and see if there is H20 and the Fluid needs changing.

Good idea to have it done, but then a good idea to have the brakes serviced pre or post winter as well.

Independents might do that, Main Dealers do not unless paid, they say with Extended Scope the wheels come off.   Maybe some do take them off, but then what do they do, LOOK.

There has been some valuable feedback in here, thank you.

I've previously run cars on shoestring budgets and paid the price. So I'm keen to make sure I'm staying on top of maintaining my Superb as it's our family car, but also keen not to be getting ripped off. I'll cancel the 'extended scope' service and take it elsewhere for an interim service and brake fluid check.

I assume £600 for the cambelt and waterpump is the going rate?

Car Inspection / Bodywork.

That is the Paint & Corrosion checks that Skoda UK say you had not done & there is no record of when they knock back a Warranty Claim even though you have a FMDSH.

That is because they did away with Service Books with the Body Inspection pages.

Visually check belts.  Tick.   Adjust?

Final Drive,  Not Haldex, but do they do Diffs?

Gearbox oil. ?

Wheels off, good they can change front to rear if you want.

(Hinges, well that was always the job to show you had done something, make sure you leave white grease visible. )

Door mechanism., WD 40 is that?

Well, you are in scope for a fixed interval service then because of the duration rule.

I think an independent specialist will do the cambelt and water pump for more like £400 than the quote you have from a main stealer.

£600 is fairly reasonable if they are doing the water pump too i think.

Yes, I was quoted £500 for just the cambelt, but only an insane person would pay out £500 for the water pump to then fail..

Assuming I can just request them to change to variable / flexible servicing whilst its with them? Thankfully I didn't pay the crazy prices, as I went through 'Secret Service' on bookmygarage, com.

I've done similar just now, I've booked my cam belt and water pump with them direct, then booked via the site above for a discounted service/brake fluid change. I emailed their customer service team and asked them to amalgamate the booking, which they've confirmed they've done.

Interim Service £91.20 (not sure what an interim service would cost, but its a lot less than an extended scope check £245.00)

Brake Fluid Replacement £39.99 (down from £65.00 quoted with them directly)

It’s funny that UK cambelts need changing at a time/miles level yet in mainland Europe it’s every 8 years regardless of miles, or something like that.

#fearfactor 😞

@DanoidThey do not need changing, that is the guidance given for the UK now for certain engines.   Anyone can ignore if they choose.

That advice changes as years go on, sometimes longer between and sometimes shorter by time / miles

Is it 8 years in the EU or Mainland Europe for Euro 6 2.0 TDI's or just something lie that?

The exact times is in the files on Erwin, but I can’t quite remember but it’s around 8 years if I recall, yet over here 5 years/50k for some reason
