Do Skoda care/ how to advise them, of failures in safety systems? LKA lane keep assist confused by shadows

Featured Replies

I recently drove across the famous Viaduc de Millau (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_Viaduct) in my 2020 Octavia (MkIII). It has the lane keeping assistant (LKA) which I keep enabled.

It was badly confused by the shadows from this beautiful bridge's many and varying support cables, see pictures attached.

The LKA sometimes tried to drag me to the right out of my current lane, and sometimes to the left.

Do Skoda/ VAG care to know about these things? How could we advise them of these failures of safety systems?

(I have told my dealership about the reliable false positives of the "collision imminent" warning system on the mountain road near my home; I'm uncertain whether they care/ whether they have a way to tell the brand/ whether the brand cares).

I'm all in favor of enhanced safety systems in cars (since, as all of us know, everyone else on the road is a worse driver than we are 😁) .. but, the systems really do have to work "well enough".

A LKA that actively tries to drag the car out of lane, pretty much ever, probably doesn't qualify as working "well enough".

thanks,

Disable / inhibit features / systems that do not work at various locations.

That is why On / Off is available.

Then,

You report to Dealerships and be sure they are communicating to Skoda CZ & VW Germany.

You communicate to Skoda Spain the Importer.

You communicate with Skoda CZ yourself.

You post online on Social Media.

Long and short is VW Group could not give a monkeys, but the boss lost his job over taking IT in-house.

Customers just get annoyed and while nobody dies the EU Commissioners will not care and introduce more compulsory safety devices and allow manufacturers to install crap systems not rested or executed properly or fit for purpose.

Hey @roottoot

Heh, you and I should sit down and have a beer/wine together. We obviously are of a mind 😅

*SIGH*

I dunno, maybe there's a European, or per-State national automotive safety administration that wants to hear these things from us? (I live in Spain, for what it's worth).

regards,

-Jay

Only if you are paying to wine and dine them and keep them on a gravy train.

Simple advise is to deactivate it. Lane keeping assist is a pointless feature. The only thing people need to keep in lane is eyes to look and arms to steer. No manufacturer will be bothered as it is an assist feature. It does not take away the responsibility of the driver to actually drive the car and if a scenario occurs, such as high lighted by the op. Then deactivate it temporarily or deactivate it period. I have lane assist on my car and it is never activated as I find it too intrusive. Plus when people rely on tech to drive a car you do switch off behind the wheel and become less aware of surroundings. Some car safety features are more dangerous than safe if you ask me.

@JayLibove - This is why I normally call the feature "Lane Enforce"; it tries to make up its own mind when you need it to activate, and responds to things like shadows, vehicles approaching on curves, and even things like blowing crisp packets.

@roottoot - Given the OP's tale, I can't believe you've ever done something like, say, trying to drive over the Queensferry Crossing on a sunny day, or if you have that you think the system is vaguely defensible.

@Ecomatt - Agreed.

@KenONeill Have you driven a car of any make with Lane Keep Assist yet?

I have a Lane Assist system that works very well, gets left on even when there is snow on the roads and i drive across the Queensferry Crossing in the sun and other conditions weekly.

On a not so sunny day when just opened.

In what sort of car; your Astra maybe?

A Corsa Electric or a BMW 520, or what ever i am driving at the time.

Lane Keep Assist can be very good, not all are the spawn of the devil.

Very good at showing how you might wander about onto other lanes when you have a good system.

So you've driven as many Skodas with Lane Enforce as I have.

'or what ever i am driving at the time'.

did you notice, that or maybe an eye test is in order?

I have driven several Skoda & VW's with Lane Keep assist and most recently Enyaqs.

The ID.3 was just terrible.

Give it a try sometime and maybe do not mix up ACC, Brake Assist or other systems with LKA.
