69 Karoq 1.5sel Almost blank infotainment displays

Featured Replies

Good evening,

Both the infotainment main display and the centre displays are almost blank. I say almost but you can just make out the info them. When you first switch on all good, however, once the engine starts, the displays dim to almost nothing. Altering the brightness, difficult and had to be in the shade, makes no difference. Conducted factory default reset, still no difference. Anyone any info greatly received.

And now just noticed that non of the interior lights work, noticed because it's now dark.

Time to check the fuses for a start then, rule that out at least to begin?

Just in from checking, iaw the manual fs27, 30A, good. Wondering if there might be a heat issue affecting something.

Possibly, but these cars are sold in much hotter climates than here, so I would doubt it.

Further investigations conducted :-

Battery disconnection for an hour - no change.

Pressing the on button to reset the infotainment - no change.

All fuses checked correct internal and engine bay.

All exterior lights working as expected. See below for headlights.

However, the headlights remain ON in auto irrespective of the time of day.

Upto the point of this issue occuring, when opening the door, no internal lights (all checked correct and original, not LEDs), came on except at night. Now, however, only the two little lights that illuminate the gear stick come on and do not go out irrespective whether, the engine is actually running, or the ignition is on but engine not running irrespective of the ambient light levels.

Whilst the two little lights remain illuminated, the centre display, the dials and the main infotainment display are extremely dark, suspect that they are at night time light level. Once the engine is stopped when parked and a few seconds have elapsed, the two little lights go out and all displays return to full brightness!!!!

Current line of thought is that the light sensor that determines when the headlights come on in auto, is not happy (because the headlights remain on), therefore the car thinks its dark. The lack of internal lights is possibly due to some sort of canbus conflict.

And the investigation continues.

Can someone confirm that the sensor for light is in the same place as the rain sensor.

Have you tested the interior lights with headlight switch in other positions?

Has the car got any warranty left?

You may also want to scan the car with VCDS/VCP?

And lastly, I think the interior lights come on regardless of how much ambient light the sensor is seeing, day or night.

Having been out this evening, all exterior lights work, cornering etc. The dash and switch lights are illuminated, however, they are slightly dimmer than normal. Also, when I went to get the dog out, no boot lights, definitely not normal. This is either really simple or going to be really expensive!!

Lots of potential causes, wiring issue or a control module is possibly loosing the plot.

Does your dash normally show which door is open when you open it?

If yes, test each door (and boot) one at a time to see if it shows on dash.

If you can get someone with VCDS or VCP to scan for any short to earth fault and the like.  The forum has the list of users with tools in map or list format.

The centre display shows which door is open individually when opened and displays all open when opened together, including the boot and bonnet.

Had a look on the VCDS who's where and there are a couple along the M27 / A27 corridor. Might have to give one a shout. Rueing the day I got rid of my Octavia.

I guess the manual switch in the roof liner doesn't do anything at all, no matter the position.

Unfortunately no. Its looking more like a control module has thrown a wobbler.

Still might not be a control module, but best to start reaching out to some VCDS members and see if you can get plugged in and full scan.

You will probably need Hex-net v2 as your car is newer, so pay attention to the kit people have.

Asked locally if anyone has VCDS but all I'm getting back is I have something similar!!!! I've had VCDS in the past and seen what can happen with "other" makes of fault code reader are used. Not going to risk it. Did think of getting the unlimited hex net v2 as it is useful and I did some things for other owners when I had my original VCDS. It is, however, not cheap.

On the fence with my old unlimited VCDS myself, I can scan my car ok, but daughter has 18 plate Audi Q2, so comms are an issue of course.

The latest update:

Took the car in for 30,000 service and defect investigation. Both front door lock modules replaced as they had developed faults, (intermittent locking when entering the car). The lack of interior lights and nearly black infotainment and central displays has stumped them. Car goes in tomorrow for a couple of days for further in depth investigation. Worse case scenario, new BCM and complete software update/reload, thankfully, all warranty work.

Reading your 1st posting my initial though was the day/night light sensor had gone but when you say there's no boot light - you haven't changed / upgraded a light bulb by any chance?

@kodiaqsportline funny you should mention that. I fitted an led boot light as soon as I got the car and there were no problems. The intermittent boot open warning, was just that, intermittent with no other faults reported that I could see. I originally posted the fault on here over two years ago with no solution. Last week, someone suggested the  led bootlight as a possible cause as he had the same issue. Bugger me, changed the lamp back to the original and there has been no re-occurance!!! I still dont have any boot light though☹️.

As to the sensor, I've done the cloth over it to simulate low light and the system behaves as it should with the headlights so that appears fine.

We'll see what the garage finds this week.

Day 3 at the dealers, still no confirmation as to the problem.

Can I change the wording of my last comment?  :D

Only reason I ask is just read another thread about someone having trouble with front parking sensors + park assist but hadn't mentioned he'd had a towbar fitted in any of his posts. Turns out it was the 3rd party towbar fitment causing the issues. Seems the towbar had been in use for sometime but had never thrown up any errors previous.

Well the car has returned and all works as it should. As well as both door lock control modules failing and having to be replaced, the major problem was the body control module itself. It failed causing a comms failure within the canbus data network. The nature of the fault still allowed exterior lights, indicators, cornering lights, auto operation of the headlights etc, to continue working, possibly a safety feature? Anyway all is now good. Thankfully all the work was carried out under warranty.

Had this car been mine, it would have had a towbar fitted, but as its pcp I haven't gone down that route, maybe in the near future. It would also get re-mapped, if I keep it.
