Sat Nav works in KM rather than Miles

Featured Replies

I bought a 2020 Octavia estate when it was three months old.  It was an ex Skoda UK car and I trade in my excellent 2016 version of the car.   There are many features on the new car I dislike or think are dangerous. Lake assist, pedestrian proximity, and the adaptive cruise control that have caused me heart stopping moments.  There are so many "gizmos" on the car that my wife refuses to drive it. I don't like it either compared to the previous one.

The rear wiper operates with an intermittent wipe when ever the front wipers are on any setting.  As the state has a rear spoiler on the back of the roof the rear screen rarely gets wet from rain but only from spray on the motorway. Thus the rear wipe scrapes noisily and has worn the blade out.

However the biggest issue is that the Sat Nav work in KM and nothing the dealer of Skoda can do seems to be able to sort it.  I gather there are some 400 cars with the same issue. It "speaks" in English but quotes km and metres for the distances. How someone approved UK spec cars with that I do not know.  Skoda have now said there si noting they can do, so I am looking at legal action.

I get your point.

Octavia IV's are not renowned for their great infotainment software, plenty of threads on here.

"Lake assist" sounds a good feature (yes a joke, Lane assist it is)

Normally you should be able to specify in the infotainment the unit's of measurement, but again with potentially buggy software, that could be missing or not sticking when set.

Yes, the KMH/MPH is the one remaining issue I have with my car. That is, the Sat Nav cannot be switched to miles and the speedo on the Virtual Cockpit cannot be switched to KPH

In version 1668 of the infotainment software I was able to follow this part of the manual and change the units (but it had no effect):

ŠKODA OCTAVIA 01.2020
Page 64 - Settings
Setting units
The units are set in the following Infotainment menu. Menu -> Settings

Now on version 1896, units are no longer in the Menu -> Settings location. When I queried this with my local Skoda garage they raised a case with Skoda UK and the response I got was that it's a known problem and that a fix is being worked on.

Investigating the road vehicles (construction and use) regulations I found the following:

  • https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/35/made

Which show that changing the speedometer to KPH is a legal requirement for selling the car in the UK.

But as someone else has said on the forum (I can't find the post right now) "As far as I know (because I’ve been pestering SKODA for a update) there isn’t currently a fix for it but there is one planned down the line."

Why would you want to use the built-in system when you get better results using Waze or Google Maps?🤔

You perhaps don't know how Tulip road books work.  It's the distance as driven so it doesn't get the right results using a mapping programme.

Same thing with the Golf Mk8, Seat Leon Mk4 and Cupra Formentor. They all share the same infotainment hardware and software. Only difference is the UI.

Yup!

The satnav in km is a known problem. Škoda UK had my car at the dealers for 5 months whilst they identified the fault and developed a fix. Mine was the first in the UK to get that fix as a test. Been fine ever since! Look back through the KPH/MPH thread in this forum - a long (very long) tale of woes and frustration for many of us. Some rejected their car before the fix came along (and with other issues on top).

The fault in mine also included the Speedo unable to display kph, could only get mph regardless of changing settings. So, speedo - only mph; satnav - only km. Crazy! All ok now though.

There is a fix, and I understood the plan was to roll it out across all cars affected.

For the rear wiper, there is something in the settings to disable the auto wipe when the front ones are on. I turned it off about 18 months ago when I first got the car (ex. demo at 6 months old).

That's what I find strange about the whole experience as I know you have a working solution but Skoda don't seem to want to roll it out more widely.

Maybe it requires hardware changes and they don't have a good supply of parts? Or maybe they're looking for a software only solution to make it cheaper to resolve?

In either case we have to sit and wait for an unknown period of time for whatever general solution they come up with. I'm off to Europe this weekend so I've printed out a KPH->MPH conversion table to pin to the dashboard 😆.

Yes, mine had a hardware change so could be a supply issue as you mention.

Whilst it’s encouraging that there is a fix it must be massively frustrating not being able to get it applied. I feel for you guys, and also feel mightily privileged to have had a fix installed.

@Derwent may be if you share the info I mentioned earlier with your dealer they can put a bit more pressure on Škoda UK and push for a release of the fix. Every little helps, as they say.

Surely the only place you don't need to do this? 🤔

With my car the speedo could not display KPH which is what alerted me to the issue as I was planning a European road trip. By the sounds of it @Mark Hiscock has the same issue hence the conversion table - a quick scan of that is a lot safer than the mental arithmetic.

Apologies - that now makes sense... 🤦‍♂️
