Skoda Fabia 1.4 2004 Engine swap

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I've been trying to find an Auto Bky engine to swap in my fabia for sometime now and i'm having no luck.

Will a Bby work? my main concern is the ECU side of things being compatible.

Any info on this conversion would be much appreciated.

If you can find a running driving engine gearbox you can try  to see all is well would yo not be better buying that car and selling your one?

We already have the engine out. We had a replacement engine but that was the manual bky. I didn't realise the blocks are different with the manual and auto. As the engine is already out i'm thinking it's easier to just chuck a running engine in. The auto variant of the BKY seems to be like rocking horse **** though.

If another engine code works and all i have to do is swap over the sensors then happy days. I have found a auto bby so if anyone knows if that will work ideal?

I should think it would work OK, especially if you bought and fitted its engine ECU too*.  Can't remember if your BKY is with or without EGR valve? BBY will have one.

* after sidestepping any immo issues resulting from the swap

I will have to enquire if it comes with the engine ECU. My BKY does have and EGR. So as long as the BBY that im buying comes with the engine ECU I should be fine?

I would think so. May even be worth trying it with your existing ECU for simplicity, if all the peripherals are getting swapped across it shouldn't really see any difference, at a guess?

Worth a punt i suppose. Out of interest, do you know the differences between the Bky and Bby?

When comparing the manual versions, one is a slug and the other is quite a good but noisy engine.

Progress on the part of VW Group.

Which way round? My BBY is near silent, the BKY less so. Don't find the BBY at all slug-like, haven't had the BKY road legal so don't know.

Bky and Bby

I had a very quick look at the first BKY wiring diagram for Fabia and it didn't leap out at me. Thought I might see a change to non-wideband lambda sensing from BBY to BKY, or similar (as happened from AZQ to BME in the 1.2s), but didn't. Can have a more in-depth look later.

It was the manual gearbox version of the BBY that I found to be a bit of an under performer when compared with the noisier revised versions.

Cannot add too much, other than the engine map between the 2 engine codes will maybe make your old ECU make engine run rough.

Mainly for the fuel injection strategy being different between them.

Thank you for the info.

What can i do to get around this?

As @Breezy_Pete mentioned.

1. Try it, might be just fine

2. See if you can purchase the ECU from donor engine, and sort immobiliser

3... See what anyone else can suggest

The engine cores will be the same, block and head, ancillaries may be different and some sensors too.

For an easy life just swap all the sensors and ancillaries from the dead BKY to a BBY core.

So most importantly will this fit the automatic gear box from the Bky? I bought a manual bky and the gear box didn't fit due to the block being cast differently.

BBY only came with an automatic gearbox on the Fabia.
