Oil recommendations???

Featured Replies

Hi peeps,

so had my car about 4-5 months I think. Time for oil and filter change, so

what’s everyone’s oil recommendations and is the filter a paper type or canister type,, I normally used castrol magnatec but as I’ve only really driven fords wondered what people use in there cars (Skoda). Oh and how much oil is needed in my Octavia VRS 2010 diesel

think I’m gunna need to buy the Haynes manual for fluid types and the quantities 🤣

thanks peeps

You want the correct spec, so that is VW 504 00 / 507 00.   The TDI needs VW 507 00 for fixed or variable service intervals.

(Euro 5 Emissions & Euro 6 until VW changed their recommendation in 2018 for WLTP certification. You do not need or want VW508 00 / 509 00 0w 20 FS IV)

So that will be 5w 30 FS III.

   Who makes it, has the name on the label, ie, Castrol, Shell, Mobile, Asda, Tesco, Comma etc does not really matter.

oil brand any good ?? It will be serviced twice a year regardless of mileage,, or should I stick to castrol, millers etc never really put cheap oil in me cars but if this stuff is correct I’ll try it

Yes.

No need to pay that much though.

Often Super Markets are using it to beat other super markets in a Price Match.

From personal experience I would avoid Asda oil.

You don't say which engine you have.

There's a sticky on this forum detailing oil change requirements.

@MicMac a vRS diesel 2010 I read in the op.  What was your personal experience with Asda branded oil.  ? Which oil producer do you think they get it from?  Some dodgy place producing for a multinational retailer.  Maybe COMMA.  That was ok.  Now articles say that since the Issa brothers bought Asda the Asda engine oil is produced by CASTROL.      Maybe worth avoiding then!

@roottoot

I have a feeling of deja vu with your question and think I explained things to you a few years back and you were dismissive/argumentative.

5 years with regular services using Petronas oil without issue, 2K miles after Asda oil the turbo sh!t itself... coincidence?

Edited by MicMac

Yes pure coincidence and a turbo at least 5 years old.   Or buying the wrong spec maybe by not reading the label.

Believe what you want, your opinion is unimportant to me.

I  normally get 20 litre drums of Fuchs, Castrol or 5 litres of Quantum.

The links for Mannol are a good price. I have never used it. Is Mannol any good?

Not sure mate I’ve never used it either. But I went for the petronas in the end

@FatblokeVRS

It's currently in my car!

It's a reputable brand and their other products are good so I've no cause for concern.

If you really search hard there's some great deals, searching for "oil service kit" can sometimes reveal oil+filter deals at lower prices than just the oil alone!
