1.8 TSI 118kW misfire, smoke, no start

Featured Replies

Hello,

may I ask you for your opinion what could happen to this engine before I manage to obtain a compression test results:

I was driving about 10 km when hard vibrations started, performance drop, EPC and Check Engine light came on.

I pulled away and noticed white smoke from exhaust.

I turned off the engine, and there was smell like burned oil and rubber from the front, as well some fresh oil leak under the car.

After a while I tried to start the engine and it suceeded, but there were heavy again vibrations and white smoke. I stopped it and towed the car.

NB: in 2017 pistons were replaced due to high oil consumption (and timing chain as well).

Now it does not start and quick scan shows:

Thanks for your comment.

Hi, welcome to the forum. Strong possibility that the cam-chain has stretched, or cam tensioner has failed, causing the valve timing and fuel injection to get out of sync.

Do you think some valves ended bent ?

Thanks

Unfortunately, very likely to be the case, plus possible damage to pistons. 1st thing to check will be the cam chain and tensioner - then, depending on what is found there, ideally, the head would need to come off if found that compression has been lost.

For sure I'm looking to have measured the compression first.

Meanwhile just speculating, would it be possible this all is caused "just" by a blown turbocharger?

I bought the car few days ago with  000564 - Boost Pressure Regulation P0234 - 000 - Limit Exceeded (Overboost Condition)

Oil from turbo got into throttlebody (000545 - Angle Sensor 2 for Throttle (G188)) and into cylinders (white smoke + 000768 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected ) ?

In 2017 timing kit, pistons and turbo were replaced.

This cam chain can be checked while engine is still in car?

Engine measuring block 093 is of no use if the engine is stopped?

Thanks.

Hi, it was the 'hard vibrations/misfiring' you quoted that concerned me. I suppose turbo failure could be a possibility, but if the oil seals have 'blown' I see it as less likely for it to cause an over boost issue.

I may be wrong, but I think the fuel rail low pressure (000135, P0087) fault does point towards something driving the fuel pump.

Also, unless the turbo has shed its blades into the engine, I don't really see it shutting it down completely.

Hello Warrior,

mechanic told me cylinder pressures are 12-13 in each and there is possibly damaged fuel injector.

as well i was told i'm dumb because i bought the car with the worst engine in the world.
