OK. More confusion. Tappets used to be just under the rocker cover for easy access. I guess the things i am going to adjust tomorrow, that look very much like the tappets of old must be now called something else!!!

He means the hydraulic lifters. Some people call them hydraulic tappets.

Nah, they're rockers, always have been.

Yup, my Dad explained that one to me whilst rebuilding a 1275 A-series, about 50 years ago.  Not actually any such thing as tappets, usually rockers with lifters of some variety.  "Adjusting the tappets" just refers to setting the gap (if required) between the rocker arms and pushrods, or lifters.  The old man reckoned the name probably came from the tapping noise they made if incorrectly adjusted.

Yes there are, but the tappets make direct contact with the cams. What most people refer as "tappets" are actually various forms of slack adjusters.

Please note - I am not a mechanic or expert in anything.

I reset the valve clearances or "checked/adjusted the tappets" on my (recently former) A-series 1275 engine only a matter of weeks ago as part of the annual service (don't bother at six-months service).  You get noise even if they're adjusted correctly (not that I'm any good at it) that's partly why the aftermarket alloy rocker covers are fitted, that and bling, and vanity/ego if you have a name on it or put on it.  Then of course you can colour match it to the engine bay, the car body, your racing team colours or your favourite nail polish.  They do of course add a few hp (or fraction of with an A-series).

I've always called the part in direct contact with the cam a cam follower.

It's that too, but I got my information from the Wikipedia article in this case.
