Oil flush YES or NO ???

Featured Replies

Still waiting to do my oil change and filter but just out of curiosity is it worth putting one of them oil flush treatment things in first ?? Can’t say I’ve ever used one but is it worth it or are they just gimmicks ??

I think like Pete a no also, unless when you change the oil it comes out like jelly, you are fine.

If it did, then you would be just as well to get some cheap oil to run through for a few minutes/Miles* to clean out.

Drop oil again and place in new filter and your good oil.

*because I am not a mechanic, someone will probably say this is good/bad

Sounds like a good idea In book captain 👍🏻only kinda asking as the oil looks really black ,, may do like you say put some cheap oil in for a week or 2 then drop that and replace the filter again as they cheap enough also.

Diesel will look black in no time, if you drop the oil from a petrol it should be darker but not black in my experience.

Maybe take a picture of the oil on dipstick or tissue paper and some can suggest if best to do a run with cheap oil/filter for a week or such.

I’ll post a pic at dinner captain but I like your idea and it’s a good shout in my book ,,, I’m not bothered about the cost but if I can help with maintaining it and it running longer I’ll gladly do it.
already changed coolant and done brake fluid change (only by opening the bleed nipples and pressing brake to drag newish fluid through)

just engine oil and gearbox oil to do. But I’ll post a separate question regarding oil and gearbox filling and draining 🤣

Hi, similarly I am no mechanic however my understanding was that an oil flush is only really required if the engine has been badly neglected and is all sludged up inside.

Flush that engine.  With what engine oil is in there.

Then filter and see what has come out.

Run the engine to operating temperature and drain it hot while being careful removing the drain plug, or just suck out the oil.

Maybe when you first get a used car remove the sump plug, next services just suck out.  IMO.

I had a friend who practically ran his Merc diesel into the ground, I witnessed the oil being dropped and it came out in globs 😬I think they ran in some cheap oil as a flush.  Let's just say he thought servicing was wasting his money.

I still remember him saying it started better afterwards and was more economical 😁

Cheers peeps,,,

I don’t think it’s been neglected I’m just really unsure of how long it’s been and what brand, spec has been used,,

think I’ll just put some cheapo stuff in then as said drop and put me petronas in 👍🏻

Don't use cheap oil as a flush. Just get the proper spec oil for your engine (vw507 or whatever) and a new filter. Run that for a couple of months then change it again and continue with your usual 6/12 month oil change intervals.

Mannol oil on ebay is cheap and the right spec (presumably)

Mannol vw504/vw507

I’ll put correct grade/spec but just a cheap one,, I normally do oil every 4 months or so regardless of miles,, most of the time I’m town driving so I’m in traffic get engine hot 🤣🤣

I only flush an engine if he oil has jellified, I drain it and put 1/4 back and then fill with parafin to the lower dipstick mark, then I run it at a fast idle until at operating temperature and for 5 minutes more.

If you do this take extra precautions against scolding your forearms when draining, it will shoot out much further than sump oil.

No.

the logic being - if your engine is that gummed up that it needs a additive/thinner to get the old oil out, then the least of your worries should be the oil itself and more what’s caused it, what else has it damaged and why hasn’t it been serviced on time.

drop the oil, change the filter, by the time the filter change is done, 99% of the oil will have drained

I say why not!? I also chose to use an oil flush on my last change.

The car was previously serviced mainly on the long life interval which I personally find too long between changes.

So I bought a can of Liqui Moly and chucked it in before dropping the oil.

Was surprising just how black the oil came out this time and considering I'd only done 8,000km since they'll last change. So I'm confident it definitely shifted a fair bit of crap out the engine.

  • 4 months later...

I've just used some stp oil flush . New filters, fresh oil . Let's just see . Skoda Fabia skout 1.4 diesel.

If its been used regularly from a low mileage it may be OK but if its not, it could dislodge sludge / carbon that could block oilways, cause leaks etc.

Modern full synth is loaded with cleaning agents so best to use correct spec oil and change it and the filter regularly. Also give it a thrashing now and then to get the oil moving around and picking up the contaminants especially just before an oil change.

Bear in mind products may well have  <5 year shelf-life... whatever did we do before BB and UB dates!

I change the oil on the VRS and Audi every 5000 miles so oil is used quite quickly.

Wow, just noticed the cost has gone up from £60 to £80 in just a few days.

I used to use STP oil flush on a mega miles 1.6TD 1990 Passat before an oil change as a couple of the hydraulic tappets were noisy - it quietened them down for a few thousand miles. Didn't want to rebuild the engine as the car was nearing the end of its life.
