"xxx not available when ignition off" error when engine is running

Featured Replies

My first post here as a Skoda newbie - I bought a 2018 Superb MK3 L&K in July. Loving it - did a first long trip from South Bucks to Antwerp and back on half a tank of diesel last month.  Previous car was a 2015 Mercedes E250 which spontaneously combusted at 5am one morning.

An odd quirk has surfaced that occasionally you get an error saying that The ignition must be on or the Engine must be running when it clearly is.

Most commonly I see a message about the Start Stop system being inactive - when you click on the (i) to find out why it says something along the lines of "The ignition must be on for this feature to operate" but the engine is actually running. I am not so bothered about this as I usually disable Start/Stop since it seems to cut off at inopportune moments with the DSG.

I've also seen a similar error when accessing the MySkoda online services that says "The ignition muse be on in order to use this feature" - and the engine is running! Not always just sometimes...

It's just been in the dealer for a full software upgrade (the UI now has the coloured pictures on the buttons) and still does this randomly, but not every time.

As an aside, I was unable to register the car with mySkoda until the software update was done. It took a lot of arguing to get it done at no-cost under Skoda Approved used warranty as the policy says it excludes software updates unless they are required by a repair.  It took some convincing that mySkoda not working at all was a fault in itself.

Thanks!

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum.

That message means that one of the criteria for allowing the engine to perform an 'Idle stop' has not been met - therefore the engine keeps running (stop-start temporarily disabled)

One of the criteria is A/C running - but set temperature not met.

Another is possible windscreen misting/fogging conditions.

or battery isn't fully charged or it's older than ~24 months(crossed half period of it's lifetime)

Although quite reasonable to expect at least 4 to 5 years life from a battery given normal care.

"expected" not always has connection to real life 😞

replaced after 4 years

-> AGM warranty replace

first signs started about 10 months earlier

(Start-Stop almost all the time weren't work)

-> Battery monitoring

now i have, most of time, disabled Start-Stop by additional memory module

-> Memory module for Start-Stop button

Still not an unreasonable expectation - my Octavia has a 6 year old EFB, most mileage is short trips commuting, and always use stop-start, battery still tests as good.
