Clunk when changing gears

Featured Replies

I have recently purchased a Skoda Fabia 2019. I hear an annoying clunk when I change gears. It happens mainly in 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th.  If I take my foot off the gears really slowly it’s fine but when I accelerate quickly I can hear it making a ‘clunk’.  I tried resetting the gear box but it’s not much better. It’s still under warranty so I’m going to take it back but hoping someone might be able to shed some light on the problem. Thanks.

My 2019 1L 110 TSI seems pretty noisey {to me} gearbox wise. Some days working up through the gearbox up to 3rd is a clunky affair.
I seem to of noticed it more recently over the past few weeks, i was struggling to get a smooth gear change when releasing the clutch.
Changing at higher revs and slightly slower pedal release at the biting point of releasing the clutch has helped mine.
Even just idling / coasting in 2nd gear just as your coming to a stop sometimes isn't a smooth experience. I usually just drop the clutch at that point.
Mines always been like that from new.

Thanks for input Gonzini. Seems to be same in mine as changing gear at lower biting point does help. Friend suggested slack in gearbox but thb I’m clueless about that. I’m trying not to worry so good to know I’m not alone with this problem. It is annoying though.

Could well be, i think they all have their own character as such even though mass produced.
I always do foot to floor with the clutch, would never have it near to being engaged while changing gears but maybe you don't mean that when you say changing at a lower biting point. I take it yours is a normal manual clutch not DSG?
Guess the clutch feel can change over time as it wears so just have to adapt to get the smoothest changes.
I do get the impression with these cheaper (still expensive when new) models that things like road noise / transmission aren't top of the list.
When i first had mine the rattling noises from the interior trim / doors was ****ing terrible. It went back 3 times to sort rattles out. I think they found a floating screw rattling about one time in the front heater ducting FFS.
I'm not impressed with Skoda on this car for that. It still rattles now with the door rims.
Don't know what revs you get to changing up through the gears but I've started to get around 2.5 / 3k from 1st up to 3rd once its warmed up and oil temps are nominal.
Seems to give a smoother gear change, but i think its always been like that for me from new as sure mentioned this before on here a few years back.
If your not sure / convinced take the car back and get them to check it out and explain why it happens.

Thanks again Gonzini. Agree that it is expensive for what it is. I meant changing gear at slightly lower revs - my foot is always right down on the clutch to change gears. I’m  going to take it to Skoda garage as it still under an extended warranty. If they find anything I’ll definitely post.

Try changing up at higher revs, more than at the point when the display tells you to change.
They're quite lively little engines so no harm exploring the upper rev range once things are at temperature.
Don't do it when first started and cold though! When the oil temp is around 70+ your kinda there.
Good luck, I'm sure it fine :)

Skoda Fabia 2019

It would be useful to know which engine and gearbox you have?

Thanks AG Falco

A big thank you for input AG.

I’m not sure if this is the right information:

Fabia Hatch SE TSI 95 PS 5G manual.

if that’s not right, can you tell me how/where I can find the information?
thanks.

Oops! Forgot to write SE 1.0…

You can also add that info to your car info on your profile (edit profile) and it appears under the name and picture bit on the left of your posts (I've no idea what that bit's called) which can be seen with each of your posts when viewed on some machines with some systems, I've no idea about mobile "smart" phones or devices though.

Adding the year to that car info would also help and perhaps that its a Mk3 Fabia for if you post on other model sections also your location, if only UK .

So, I see it as (and only for example) -

Location: (UK?)

Model: Fabia Mk3 Hatch 1.0 TSI (SE 95 5G manual)

Year: 2019

Thanks nta16. Didn’t know I could do that.

No problem, it encourage me to amend mine and add gearbox type.

Your location can be handy when asking for or giving help - or knowing where to avoid for some in my case.

I must admit I didn't quite follow your original post and was going to ask for the info AG asked for but then I thought it better to leave it to someone who knows or has a 2019 car or Fabia because in the four years there are so many differences.

Two bits of advice (though some call it other) I always give is to refer to the Driver's Handbook (Owner's Manual) though 2019 seem to be digital(?) and sometimes even more confusing in explanation than earlier paper printed versions. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

Secondly not to let your car battery get too low in charge even if the car starts and your lights seem bright enough and you have no dash warnings the computers do like it and can throw all sorts of unexpected wobbles and then start with lights and warnings.  The car use alone isn't always enough to fully recharge the battery (see Owner's Manual) so you can use an appropriate battery charger (see Owner's Manual).  The extreme hot weather we had this summer wasn't good for car batteries (or their charging systems) and the effects if not already surfaced will about now and more so as it gets darker and colder.  Prevention is better than cure or having issues or waiting for breakdown recovery.

I have spread the word, I will get my reward in Heaven (cos I ain't bleeding seen it down 'ere yet). 😄

Have a good 'un.
