Offside front and rear water ingress

Featured Replies

Could not find any posts on this but sure there must be? I noticed dampness in the front and back footwells which is disappointing but not unusual in many previous cars. This Superb has not been messed with so I am wondering if there is a known issue before I start tearing the thing apart.

We have had a lot of rain out in West Ireland but it should not be leaking inside. No obvious signs of ingress when washed/jet washed via door seal.

Any ideas?

Thanks

If you have a sunroof then most likely the drain pipe is blocked and needs cleaning.  There is thread covering this in the forum.

I never seem to do very well with the search function on the forum?

I make the assumption that the Superb MK3 estate body shell isn't significantly different to my MK2 estate?

I had been getting water coming into the passenger footwell after heavy rain and especially if I parked with both nearside wheels on the pavement in front of my house.

Under the bonnet below the windscreen on the passenger side of the car there is a channel with an opening close to the bottom of the channel underneath a cover for the heater blower motor.  There isn't much depth from the opening to the bottom of the channel section and I make the assumption because you can't see with the windscreen wiper mechanism covers in place that during heavy rain the channel wasn't emptying fast enough and the excess water was running into the blower motor opening and then into the passenger foot well.

I found when I took the front wheel arch liners off the car between the wheel arch liners and the bodywork they were absolutely caked up with leaves and what looked like black compost so there must have been several years worth. This was stopping the rain water from away fast enough from the drain channel. I hosed the bulkhead clean and I've not had anymore ingress of water into the car.

Luckily in the mk3 they fixed the scuttle blocking up issue.

they made the holes much bigger and unrestricted so things hardly block them up.

that being said if you like in an especially dusty/lots of leaves area you may still suffer if there’s enough of it

I didn't have problems with the scuttle blocking it was clear. It was down between the bulk head and wheel arch liner was totally blocked so the rain water couldn't drain away fast enough.

I plan to remove arch liners and clean out as this was going to be a "keeper". I can hear water sloshing now and so it is a major issue on a fairly new car.

UPDATE!! Had a call last night from my local garage man as I could not find any leaks and all drains were clear. He advised the screen was loose!! We are booked on a ferry on Monday.

Brilliant.

Only Thursday.  Are there no windscreen fitters local that have a screen in stock and an appointment available?

I have to go through insurance and Autoglass have to check back with insurance before committing as they don't repair unbroken glass but insurance told me to call them so have approved it to me. Now we have to wait for the farce to unravel. There are no windscreen facilities near me (Western Ireland). If it needs rebonding I will pay it but if they break it then its covered anyway!

Likely I will be taping it in place to avoid cancelling the trip as its been like it a while now.

Why are you bothering to tape it in place? It's not come flying off while you have been driving at speed and it will take the fitter a lot of struggling with a hot wire cutter to detach the screen from the remainder of the bonding.

There was a simple way to resolve that, one that pedestrians, the partially sighted, mothers with pushchairs etc would all have appreciated.

My garage guy says it is very very loose and not safe to drive (especially in a foreign country).

Your comments about pavement parking are nothing to do with me BTW. Different poster.

So insurer will not cover the replacement - as predicted. Mr Windscreen hopefully will come and re seal it locally or replace if it breaks, tomorrow. If not there is a cheap ferry ticket going spare to France.

This car is 2018 and not had a new screen so simple failure of the bonding.

At least you know what the issue is now.

Not wishing to be a worry-causer but on modern cars, the windscreen contributes to the structural integrity of the car so if it was me, I'd replace it as sealing isn't going to replace the bonding in structural terms and I doubt that it'd be possible to remove and reinstate the existing windscreen.

Sealing it is bonding it as they will use the same compound, and yes if it is as detached as the panic striken garagiste suggests then they will indeed remove it to rebond around the whole periphery.

It's very simple for Freddy to see if any exaggeration is going on, all th has to do is push against the screen all around the periphery from the inside and he will soon see the extent of any movement.

My pal had a Renault van which had a creaking noise from the scuttle area, his screen was only held on in a couple of places and could be pushed to and fro so I know it can happen, I just have my doubts about a VAG car, a leak yes but falling out??????? My pals screen was removed and rebonded.

I know which is why you will see that a different person was quoted, just as I am quoting you now, this forum allows you to quote more than one person in a posting, if you create two postings then they will be automatically merged anway if no-one else has posted in between them.

All fixed now. The windscreen had been replaced unknown to me as the guys confirmed it. The sealant had not actually adhered to much of the screen as I witnessed. It came out very easily and has been replaced so saving me a lot of cash. Very grateful to Mr Windscreen Ltd who turned up as promised and sorted it at short notice. Now to dry it all out which will require some carpet lifting.

Thats been open to the elements for a very long time judging by the build up of crud, I mistakenly thought you were the first owner of the vehicle from your comment that it had not been messed with.

Are you sorted in time for your ferry trip?

It was bought from a Main Ford dealer in Ireland and had been imported by them. It was owned by a company in UK for 18 months. Low miles. Full service records etc all in place. It was immaculate and exactly what I was looking for. It could be the dealer had replaced the screen just before we bought it as my wife seems to remember she mentioned some chips in the screen when she viewed. I went down to buy it and I could not find a mark on it anywhere.

I never buy a new car unless it was a company car! This was as close as I have ever been to new as a private buyer (Skoda Superb - best in class etc.) Has been great but abused by other idiots in Ireland who often do not care about smacking their doors into your car sadly.

I have a few chips to repair to keep it decent. I noticed the damp ingress some time ago but now it pours in!

It belted down last night so hopefully no worse now. Will mop up and keep the dehumidifier on.

Ferry trip is still on thanks.

@freddyukjust being nosy but what was the history of servicing in 18 months.  1 company Registered keeper in 18 months.

Was it on a Fixed service regime with the first company and one oil & filter change, or was there more to it than that?

>40%.
We had a 1991 Fiat Tipo which had this issue and Autowindscreens rebonded the screen.
