Engine continues to run when key removed

Featured Replies

My neighbour alerted me to the fact that the car radio was on so I went out to turn it off and the door would not unlock using the fob. I opened it with the key and tried starting the car, which started first time with no problem. I then tried to turn it off and even though the key was removed the engine continued running. The only way I can stop the engine running is by stalling it, but even with the key removed the battery and handbrake lights are still illuminated on the dashboard.

I presume this means that the ignition switch is somehow stuck in the on position? Can anyone suggest a solution I can try to resolve this myself? The RAC have said there is currently a four hour wait… TIA.

Common problem with that switch since it came out in the 95 A4, test the concept by unplugging it. Part number 4B0 905 849

Thanks for the help @Crasher… I’ve managed to get it to stop with the key, but the ignition then suddenly came back on when the car was parked and the key not in the ignition. Would this still point towards an issue with the switch you suggested? TIA

I would say and hope so, it is wasn't the problem is going to be more difficult to find.
