Broken front springs.

Featured Replies

I have arranged to buy a 2009 1.4 hatch and the garage that is selling it is MOTing it for me. I has failed on two broken front springs. I appreciate that how it has been driven has a big effect (previous owner may have been careless over speed humps) but is this a common fault with the Fabia. It hasn't quite done 70,000 miles.

Yes quite common for these to snap/break on the MK2, our 2008 MK2 Fabia was always driven correctly through it's life and the both front springs had to be changed , there is a weakness at the top of the spring where it goes into the wing hosing cap bearing  I have also seen these springs snap when the weather has dropped below freezing it's just the way they make them these days to make them cheap for the car makers so don't worry about it is a fault with these cars and many other makes Ford Seat etc

Incredibly common, VAG group springs seem to be made from glass, British roads don't help though.

If it is a 2009 car used in Central Scotland, that is a very good/long life for the original front road springs, I've had 6 years out of a 2002 car and 7 or 8 years out of a 2009 car, my wife's 2015 VW Polo must be getting near wanting new front springs!

Don't know the car history or if springs have been replaced previously. it is not a Scottish reg.

front spring on my RS broke @ 19,000 miles.............and I'm gentle over speed humps and do my best to avoid sunken drains and potholes.

Mine went on my 2010 car about 2 years ago, its an age thing i think rather than a mileage thing, they just rot.

The fact that both front springs broke at the same time after 70,000 miles and 14 years shows that they have a consistent quality.

Kilen springs are available on ebay for about £14 each, so it's the labour that's the expensive part.

6Q0411105AF might be suitable, but check your build codes or the coloured dots on each spring that can be used to identify them.

As you can see in the chart below, if each spring is marked with 4 red dots and 1 blue dot, they will have OEM part number 6Q0411105AF.

Whatever the dealer fitted should see me out. I only do 3K a year now so if I get 20K I will be laughing.
