Skoda Symphony Cassette - No Backlighting

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Bought one of these that came from an Octavia originally for my Fabia and it plays fine and all that. However, the backlight appears to not come on with the lighting, and the stereo won't switch off when I take the key out.

Has anyone had this issue with one of these units?

Check the S Contact fuse. I can't remember what amperage it is or location now. It's in the Mk I Fabia fuse layout post I made many moons ago.

Here you go. Fuse 10

Cheers Lee. Backlighting works with an MS202 and my VW Gamma but I'll check it anyway. :)

It sorted the radio not switching off when I took the keys out of the ignition barrel on my MkI with OE radio cassette player 👍

Cheers. I'll mess about and see what comes of it.

It's the lack of backlighting that's doing my nut in though, can't see the display at night. :D

Do you know what year Octavia it came from, roughly?

2002 Mk1 Octavia according to the eBay listing. :)

Will compare wiring info when I next get up.

Backlight feed seems to be on the same pin on each car, pin 6 of black 8-way connector, so perhaps it's just a fault with the one you've bought?

Perhaps. I wonder if there's a way to repair it. :wondering:

Gaffer tape and a hammer or WD-40. If none of that works, bin it :D

I'd be happy to have a look at it Ryan.

I did repair what may have been the same unit type in a workmate's Fabia by just resoldering some of the connector pins. Getting to the board they were on was quite a mission though as I recall.

Different fault, that one was intermittent speaker connections.

See if waggling that grey/blue wire makes it come alight?

The not switching off with the key might be the 'ign' setting in the menu.

After that I'd double check the connectors are well seated and none of the pins have moved

Aye that would do actually Pete, I'll post it down after Christmas.

I'll try what @skomaz has said as well about the connectors first, and some more troubleshooting.

Aye I managed to use the (helpfully annotated by the previous owner) manual to find that the 'ign' setting is set so that it should go on and off with the key.

I'll try messing with the pins and suchlike.

Cheers both, and @@Lee - I like a 'hammer' approach to troubleshooting. :D

Had a further look at this, it seems to be missing a pin on the back of the head unit at the ISO connector area. I'll post a photo once I have the spare phone running enough. Bigger fish to fry at the moment anyway. :)

I forgot about this, but as promised... :)

Snapped off?  Worth trying to botch something?

Possibly? I've potentially got another unit here I can use as a donor to get a pin from. Otherwise I'll speak to my Grampa. :D

Hello Dear Friend, I am having the same issue with the same car stereo, the pin no 5 is missing on mine too, but as far as I have known it does not exist from the very beginning . I did not mount this unit on my car. I am using it as a radio and cassette player connected to my home stereo and the I would be pleased to see the buttons when it's dark. So I wanted to know if you were able to find a fix to this backlight issue . Thanks in advance and have a nice day.

Unfortunately I ended up giving the unit away to a friend. So I have no idea what came of it. Apologies.

Sorry to hear that and thank you for your quick and polite response 🙏💐☺️
