Change oil warning and interval

Featured Replies

Hi,

Looking for some advice please.

Over the last couple of weeks I've had a series of "Change oil in 900, 800, 700 etc miles" warnings.  The problem is warning is not tracking the actual miles, so it's gone from "change in 900 miles" to "change oil now" in the with the car only having done about 100 actual miles.

The car was only serviced in May last year and the oil was changed then.  It has done about 8k miles since then.

Is it due an oil change or could it be something wasn't reset when the service was done?

Thanks

What Engine?

So did you check after the service what they set it to.

It was set or not set properly last May.  Fixed @ 9,400 miles / 372 days or Variable 24 months / 18,000-20,000 miles.

?

Is this the 1.4 TSI /2013 you asked about the correct oil for in the past?

What does last Mays invoice show and do you know if they used 5w 30 FS III so Long Life oil, for variable or fixed services, VW 504 00 / 507 00.

or

5w 40 FS for fixed oil and filter services, VW 502 00.

I was waiting on @toot to reply, as I knew he would.  I recall someone else reported this a few months back, might take some digging out to find it.  It seems most likely it was not set correctly to a fixed service last year, and it was set roughly two years ago on a long-life service schedule where it uses internal tables inside ECU to determine distance to change.  It can drop suddenly when it get's near the end of a long-life regime and you are left puzzled when you loose a lot of miles very quickly.

Short trips basically do not equal 1 mile to 1 mile lost on the schedule, they can drop faster as these journeys will wear oil quicker.

It's whatever is programmed in the internal tables, something you have no control over.

If you had access to VCDS or similar tool you could find out what yours is currently programmed to right now, maybe variable I suspect.

Most likely. & most common.

Not reset last May.

Left running on Variable / Flexible from the service the time before and now wanting an oil change.

This is your most likely cause of it, if the oil was changed last year and is on your receipt... travel back and get them to reset it correctly this time.

If not just live with the warning each time you turn on until May, then drop oil.

If they could not managed to reset a Service Indicator last year you need to be sure they were using Long Life Oil if you want to be on a Long Life Service Regime.

I would suggest if doing around 10,000 miles a year with a TSI you get oil and filter changed annually.

Thanks for the replies.

Engine:  2013 petrol Octavia 1.4 TSI 103KW

It was serviced at a VAG specialist in my area and I'm only assuming that they didn't reset was needed to be reset.  How do I check this?

Not sure what oil was used, doesn't state on the invoice.

Assuming they didn't use the correct oil and the fact that we do a lot of short trips ( 5/6 miles 2x a day generally)  should I look to get the oil changed now?

Thanks

You may find these days that most garages put in long-life oil for long-life or 1 year fixed servicing.  Right now your best bet is still as I said, take it back to get them to reset it until May, or ignore the warnings untill May.  Your oil will get you to then no problem.  I know some people will change oil every 5k miles, but that's each to their own (maybe based upon older cars from yesteryear?)

Agree with toot and varooom.

Why not check the oil.  Provided the level's right and it's oily - as in not like black rainwater, or molasses (gloopy), or has swarf or glittery bits in it, then simply reset the warning to stop the reminder.

Then plan to have it serviced when the year is up, ask them to ensure the correct oil is used, and noted, and that the service regime reminder is set to what you expect it to be.  Yearly/10k would make sense.

Thanks, I checked the oil.  Was a little low so topped up, it looks like this:

bearing in mind, that the car hasn't run today and it's freezing.

Am I right thinking that it's best to let the car run and cool down a bit to an accurate oil level?

Thanks

@adburns

The way to check the oil is as per the owners manual but ignore if it says WARM as it is HOT or At Normal Operating Temperature.

(Skoda put 'Warm' yet VW, Audi SEAT for the same engine put Hot or at normal operating temp. only the 1.2 44kw engine is a cold check.)

So check the oil cold with engine not started. That is to know if there is oil.  then you will always know when cold because you know how that compares to HOT.

The level is checked when the engine oil is at normal operating temp, so around 90*oC indicated, over 80*oC is fine, not after it has cooled down.

Just a few minutes after parked on the flat.  (A few is a few, not 10 minutes, 15 minutes etc.)
