Throttle body re-set needed in Cornwall

Featured Replies

Can anyone recommend somewhere I can get a throttle body reset on my Felicia estate in Cornwall?  I had some work done a couple of months ago ahead of MOT and mechanic cleaned the throttle body (being helpful) but now running rough.  Bought blue VAGCOM cable from ebay (don't condemn me!) and had a go, but then realised I need the software. Going in circles.

Are you sure the problem is with the throttle body?  Did the mechanic disconnect the wires connector before cleaning or removed the throttle body from the car?

I don't know the Felicia but IIRC 1995 wouldn't be OBD2 so the OBD(1) type software will be less available.

Try this, check what, if anything, needs resetting after disconnecting and reconnecting the car battery in the Owner's Manual.  Then disconnect the car battery, with it disconnected - [ETA: - carefully bridge/join the positive and negative battery leads post clamps together to complete a circuit ] - turn the ignition on and press and hold the brake pedal down so that if the battery was connected the rear brake lights would be on, turn on the headlights too, do this for about 20 seconds, switch off headlights and ignition switch and take your foot off the brake pedal.  Whilst the battery is off you might want to take the opportunity to fully recharge the battery with an appropriate battery charger.  Then reconnect the battery.

Then try driving as normal for a few days and see how that goes and let us know here.

OK, thanks for the reply.  I did manage to connect the cable I got before and it did give me a fault code reading which said throttle body but that's as far as I could get.  I don't know what the mechanic did other than he said he had cleaned it.  I will give this a go though and see what happens and let you know.  Lesley.

Lesley, thanks for reply.

Even if it does nothing with the throttle body it wont do any harm and might help with other unknown issues or what is causing the rough running if it's not the throttle body by the 'turn it off 'n' on agen' reset.

These reboots can sometimes be handy in themselves, personally I'd boot the computers and their programs as far as I could, yours at 1995 is a lot less VW over complicated than my wife's 2015 Fabia you can be grateful for that.

Do bear in mind error codes can report the messenger rather than the actual problem or that sensor might be only part of the problem, less so in 1995 than 2015 perhaps.

I'm a big fan of cleaning the throttle body and things like, perhaps later, MAP and MAF as much servicing, maintenance and repairs boils down to simply cleaning and lubricating, even clearing error codes is a type of cleaning exercise.

For the engine service hopefully as well as the oil & filter change the air filter was looked at or replaced and if the spark plugs weren't checked or replaced than would be the next place I'd look.  If if they looked OK with a magnifying glass and were gapped correctly if they've not be changed in a few years I'd replace them.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info - the Felicia is a 2000 car, it's our 2 x Favorits that are 1995 - I've changed my profile, sorry for confusion!  But only 5 years difference! We haven't had the Felicia very long.  We had been looking for ages for an estate.

We'll try what you suggest and fingers crossed!

Have tried the suggested procedure and run car for few days - unfortunately it hasn't resolved the problem.  Is sill idling at 2,000 revs. Intermittent. It returns to about 1,000 revs if you press throttle hard or go to pull away.  Pulling up to a junction or turning is embarrassing!

So annoying - was running fine before mechanic cleaned the throttle body.

Uhmm, either something is off with the throttle body, perhaps physically, or it really does need a reset but I thought by driving enough it would reset.  There could other problem(s) / issues(s).  Have you had a look to see if something has been left off or come off, not connected fully, anything broke or damaged - an air hose, pipe or connector leaking, electric wires damaged, scuffed or pinched, electric connector.  Air intake and filter installed and set correctly.

How do you feel about taking the car back to the mechanic and say what has happened, we can all make mistakes and it might be something very simple.

You might be better starting a thread in the Felicia section as a couple of chaps from Greece are very knowledgeable on the cars and IIRC one done a video on cleaning the throttle body (but don't rely on my memory). - https://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/90-skoda-favorit-skoda-felicia-skoda-fun-and-skoda-forman/

Thanks for taking time to reply. Our mechanic is semi-retired. We have been going to him for years - he is old school but really thorough. He let us have the car back after MOT but said he thought the running was due to faulty thermostat. It was faulty and we replaced it but running still same.  I've seen other posts on here which is what led me to think re-set.  I'll post under Felicia section as you suggest and see what happens! Many thanks, Lesley

Just a thought then, perhaps a new coolant temperature sensor might be required, ask the chaps on the Felicia section to make sure you get the right type - and you don't want to be changing the coolant temperature sensor just on my thought you need to carry out more diagnosis which the chaps can also help you with.  I don't know how it relates to your coolant temperature gauge so again tell the chaps there all you can.
