Rumble/rattle on declutch most noticeable changing from 2nd to 3rd

Recommended Posts

Hello. I have a new to me six speed manual 2014 Superb 2.0 TDi 140 Elegance 4x4 with nearly 100k miles on it. It's a well maintained car with a full service history including cambelt/waterpump change at the right time. I have no evidence the clutch has been done but it feels like it may have been.

The gearbox is a little notchy. This is most noticeable when changing into third when it's cold. There are no crunches or resistance or anything like that. I have noticed a noise which may well be a characteristic and/or nothing to worry about but - as a vehicle I'm not familiar with - I'd like to get the opinion of you folks.

Most noticeable on the change from 2nd to third - as I declutch there is a barely audible rattle which quite quickly decreases. It sounds like something spinning that is slowing down. It's not a scary sounding noise, quite a gentle one, but I worry a little what it may indicate.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Charlie

Welcome to Skoda ownership!

I guess it could be a few things and a search on this forum could give further clues.

When the car is idling are is there any noise ?  The most common rattling type noise that is reported on here is the dual mass flywheel (DMF) issue.

Might be worth a read up on this, plenty on here about the subject, your symptoms might not be the same though.

Propshaft damper coupling is also a possibility on a 4x4 but then it would remain at a constantish speed if the car is moving, until you accelerate or slow down...?

Worth checking out though.

Unrelated - Do you know if your Haldex unit has been properly serviced ?  Its my old bug bear from bitter experience.  If you are not aware they need the fluid changed every 20k approx and the removable filter changed.

Skoda do not have the filter on their servicing system and it never gets done resulting in the Haldex pump clogging up and burning out.

If you have a code reader it might be worth plugging it in to see if there are any faults lurking.  I use Carista which is very handy.

Cheers

Haldex fluid change interval is 60000 km or 40000 miles.

I thought the interval was 30k, however I'm possibly wrong...  Skoda don't do it right no matter if you follow their service schedule 😠

In any case, and going by experience and also from others reporting similar issues, reducing the interval to 20k or 2 years should drastically reduce the pump failure issue.

The other weak point is the Haldex ECU which corrodes over time due to exposure to the elements underneath.

This causes water ingress to the PCB and corrosion and then faults, its almost unavoidable and time/environment related.

I am trying to get this sorted on mine just now and will report back in due course.

Cheers

If the noise is there and more consistent after the engine warms up is the DMF ,its recommend to do the clutch at the same time.

Do this, after the engine is warm stop somewhere quiet and rev it between 1400-1800 and listen to any strange noises (if you have a second person with you in the car ,open the hood and tell him to listen )... another test is on a 40mph road where you have it in 4th gear and release the acceleration pedal and listen to vibrations ...its a clear sign that DMF & clutch would need replaced.

This happened to me 3 days ago at 104k miles.

Hello all. I'm grateful for all these replies.

In answer to @TasMan... The Haldex fluid has been changed only twice, most recently last year. I've seen a couple of Haldex related codes though these were in proximity to the battery being replaced and have not recurred. That said they prompted me to research the Gen 5 Haldex so I know about the filter that isn't part of the service regime but should be. Thanks. 🙂

In answer to @Oache4u... I've done those tests and heard nothing in either case. I'm hoping this is good news! I'm wondering either if it could be bearings on layshafts in the 'box itself? Although I might also be worrying about nothing. 😉 The car is with an independent VAG specialist later this week for a couple of things and I'll try to get their opinion.

Thanks again everyone.

Hi, Just to note your car will be Gen 4 Haldex at 2014, same as mine.  Definitely worth keeping an eye on any further codes and to get the filter swapped out at some point, along with pump strainer cleaned.

Cheers
