BEWARE - Service Plan terms and Conditions

READ TERMS AND CONDITIONS BEFORE TAKING OUT A SERVICE PLAN.

In December 2022 I took out a 2 year service plan for my 2 year old Kodiaq.

In  late January I changed cars, for various reasons and bought a Yeti and looking to take out a service plan on that car. I had made 3 monthly payments on the plan for the Kodiaq which was due its service in Dec 2023, so as no service had been done I expected to either receive a refund or transfer the money to the new plan.

The local Skoda dealer told me to phone Skoda finance re this matter, as they could not deal with it. on 0870 333 4449.

This I did only to be told that no refund can be made as, according to the person I spoke to, I was voluntarily ending the agreement and therefore not entitled to a refund under the terms and conditions. Apparently if I had paid for the plan outright instead of monthly payments I would have lost the whole payment. That can't be right. The dealership stated that they would look into the matter but 5 days later they have not received a reply.

Also, to add insult to injury, I have just received my mobile phone bill only to find that the Skoda Finance tel. no. above is a "Service Number" for which I was charged over £8 for a 13 min call. No mention either by the dealer or on the Service Plan paperwork that any call to Skoda Finance would be so charged.

NOT A HAPPY CUSTOMER.

So far as I'm aware, this has always been the case.

You decided to pay for a plan, and for the time you were paying for it, that plan was in place.  A plan is not an action, it's simply a plan, so the fact that you didn't utilise it in the time that you owned the car is presumably neither here nor there.  I don't really understand why you would expect to get a refund.

Business rate numbers, such as 0870 have always been expensive.  It's why they're called 'premium rate' numbers. Skoda Financial Services also have the 0370 option - 0370 333 4449:

The CAB are quite helpful with advice about call charges:

Cake and eat it.................................

I should be refunded for all the years of motor insurance that I didn't make a claim on.

Ed should look on the very positive side and be thankfull that he did not pay up front.

Is the Service Plan able to travel with the Vehicle when you sell it ?. Or does it just become obsolete. If it can travel it could be a good selling point or make the vehicle worth more.

I'm technically the third owner of my car as it was a failed lease contract.  I've owned it since it had twenty four miles on the clock.  The two previous owners were VW & VWFS.  When I took it in for its first service, I was pleasantly surprised that the car came into my possession with a three service plan, already paid for, that I'd had nothing to do with 👍

Heard back from the dealership today.

No joy from Skoda finance. No refund or transfer to a new plan. After owning 4 new previous Skodas I certainly won't be buying another one.

What will you be buying and what's the T&C of their service plan? You'll find it's the same whatever car you chose.

I took out an extended warranty but after a few months sold my car. I contacted the warranty helpline and I was refunded pro-rata which is exactly what I'd expect to happen. Why would I have expected to receive everything back?

Sorry but what were your expectations - that you could pay for your service in installmants interest free? I'm more surprised someone thought that'd be the case. If you decide to pull out of a contract then you're the one set to loose out. Think yourself lucky you weren't also charged a termination ( admin ) fee for doing so.

As for the 0870 number...   The price of these calls vary depending on who your phone provider is. If  YOU have chosen a provider who charges high prices for these type of calls what has that to do with Skoda?  Will you be complaining to your phone provider and telling them that you'll never be taking out another one of their contracts?

P.S.  A question was asked does warranty apply to new owner?  There was no warranty - the OP cancelled it and as it hadn't been fully paid for, the new owner would have to shell out more money. Hardly a selling point?  In any case that would only apply to a private sale because if the car was sold to a dealer / the trade, a warranty is the last thing they want. What they want to do is sell the car and offer their own warranty so that they can make extra money on the deal.  An extended warranty would have added hee-haw value to the OPs car.

This is good advice.

I know it's easy to be critical of Ed's feelings regarding this, but I understand his irritation. (Especially at the cost of the phone call.)

Unless you have a cynical old so-and-so with you, ruining your car buying experience by pointing out all the problems, it can be easy to get carried away and sign-up for one of the plethora of cash traps Skoda dealers lay for unwary customers. Sometimes the optional extras give good value, sometimes they don't. Personally, I don't like service plans, but that's just my opinion.

Yes, and then get back all his previous payments when he sold the vehicle.
