Windscreen washer nozzles: adjustable or not?!

Featured Replies

The internet can't agree: some say adjustable, some say not.

The videos I've found suggesting they are, have washers in a different location or housing, even though they're supposedly the same vehicle as mine (2011 Combi TSi 1.2).

Haynes has nothing to say on the matter. workshop-manuals says not adjustable.

I was used to the little 'swivel ball' type, that you just stuck a pin into, to adjust the angle of spray.

And if they're not adjustable, is one of them just clogged if the spray is no longer even hitting the damn screen..?

Here's mine, for avoidance of doubt re the version...

It looks like the jet housing can be moved backwards and forwards to adjust the height it hits the screen.

I agree it looks that way. Sadly doesn't seem to be the case though.

I didn't have time to do much today other than give them an experimental prod/shove.

I have this:

but it's part of this section:

The spray nozzles are optionally mounted with or without heating and cannot be adjusted.

I'll probably take the scuttle off and have a look to see what's going on under there. If they're definitely not adjustable, I'd have to do that anyway to clear a tube if it's debris that's changed its direction.

According to the picture of your nozzle it looks as if it is in the rearmost position. Have you tried pushing it forward where it is supposed to be, or does that make it worse?

^^^This.

Neither nozzle has been moved, to my knowledge. Driver's side hits the windscreen fine. Passenger side sprays ineffectually everywhere else, and that started only a month or so ago. They're both in the same location.

I tried aforementioned prodding to see if they moved. And they didn't. I wasn't inclined to use force at that point, as they look like they have snug seals between the housing and the scuttle.

Doesn't mean they can't of course. May just need a bit of persuasion. Will try that in daylight.

It seems a bit restrictive though, just the moving fore & back. Other models have a more obvious click up/down adjustment system, so wondering why this one doesn't.

Plus... what was this ⬆️ about?

That diagram is just showing how to remove them, not an adjustment.

In my experience replacement every few years is worthwhile. Should only be a few quid each, e.g. Skoda Water Jet 5J0955985 - LLLParts

Yes, that was my understanding too. And the text with it states they’re not adjustable.

I’ve now found a paragraph in Haynes that suggests they are, but I’m not convinced every model from 2007-14 has the same fixtures, as other photos & videos suggest not.

If failure is common, perhaps I should be impressed they’ve held out for 11yrs. Still wish I could just stick a pin in it though 😠

If you do opt for replacement, remove old one(s) then run the pump for a sec before fitting new, in case there's any bits of debris loitering in the last bit of the pipework.

Thanks.

I'm going to have a look at the existing ones anyway, as it feels like it should be something that's an easy fix if there's just some gubbins in pipework. But it's going to be a way down the priority list considering the multiple other electrical jobs I've got in progress.

Thanks all 🙂

I realised the diagram was for removing and replacing but the photograph looks like the jet mounting is not fully forward into the operating position and I wondered if that was affecting the angle it sits at and hence the direction of the jet.

Does the water come out of both jets at roughly the same pressure or is the poor one just a dribble?

It reaches a decent height, so not a dribble, just the wrong direction. Can't vouch for identical pressure though, it could be a finer mist though as I'm always driving, I haven't paid detailed attention to that yet. Will get my passenger to gather data next time I need them 🙂

As limescale etc builds up inside the jet, it really does not take much "debris" to affect the spray pattern, not sure how the plastic would react to removing them and dropping them in some limescale remover in warm water................maybe even lemon or vinegar would work. Might be worth removing and trying it.

failing that, replace them.

Where is "oop North"? It's potentially relevant to UrbanPanzer's limescale theory.

Please note - I am not a mechanic or expert in anything.

When we couldn't sort out a washer jet for a neighbour's 2008 Kia and he had to order a new one to my surprise they were a different jet driver's to passenger's side, I forget now pattern and pressure but the part numbers were different.

ETA: N' ptun is north of the south and south of the north, not soft (southern?) water but not over hard (northern) water.

We're not at all limey, so to speak. I originate from a super chalky area so I know what that does to kettles etc and after years of use our appliances barely show a hint of deposits, let alone a build-up.
