Intermittent shudder / misfire Fabia VRS MK2

Featured Replies

Ethanol works well for forced induction because it allows more ignition advance, zero ethanol is better for cooking N/A engines with no loss of power.

Try a tank of Tesco Momentum 99.

The Esso Synergy 99* does come from Greenergy in parts of the country, see that chart,  Greenergy are the people also producing the Tesco Momentum 99 as well and part owned by Tesco and import the fuels along with Royal Dutch Shell but there are difference.

I liked the Ethanol.

The Super Unleaded like the unleaded is winter spec until the end of March.   Nothing lost trying the Momentum.  the 99 ron is a Minimum.

Ah right, you learn something new everyday.

Thanks, will give the Tesco momentum a try next. The stuttering / rough idle was really bad today, to the point where I didn't want to drive the car. It really needs looking at.

I have not in the history of this forum ever seen anyone with the problems listed above sort it out by replacing the crank speed sensor as it just stops the car from starting if it does go faulty  I will however eat humble pie if it is that at fault but I have had the exact same problems the op has stated in the past and both times it’s been either a vacuum leak or a faulty map sensor as these engines do not run a MAF sensor so rely on the map sensors for most things /cdn-cgi/mirage/d94e9987e8d1b2a279a64d5177ba6bcbba1136357d790f550546296973f1542f/1440/https://www.briskoda.net/forums/uploads/monthly_2023_02/9B9B1C61-E520-431C-BFBA-C736F551453F.jpeg.a5697d315a5f38fe73016a25ed5cc479.jpeg

Please I don’t want you to be humbled or disappointed, every day is a school day as I have experienced today trying to get a Toerag 2 V8 air suspension to learn its basic ride height settings to +/-3mm even using the VAG system ODIS. It is certainly hard to grasp the G28 doing this but it is about the only component I know that does this, I have seen it a number of times, I think due to heat soak.

just to throw more opinions into the pot, my car runs perfectly well on standard or super unleaded fuel.

My concern with the ops car would be the fitted RTMG dump valve and R8 coil packs, what else is tweaked ? is it running an ECU map as well ?

That's good to know.

Not much else is tweaked, it doesn't have a map (according to previous owner).

Not sure if relevant, but in addition, it has uprated engine mounts, dog bone mount and gearbox mount, has been lowered and has adjustable drop links, and resonator delete.  All done by previous owner.

So, all those mods and no tweaked engine map, seems a little odd...............been messed with quite a bit really, did you know it was a "boy racers car"  in a previous life ?

When you say resonator delete, which part do you mean ? Im assuming centre silencer ?

Yeah, that's what I was told. He told me that he was going to get it remapped sometime in the future but plans changed and decided to sell it. It did seem like a boyracers car, but it was in good condition and had no knocks or rattles coming from it. The drive was smooth.

I bought it around 15 months ago and got it serviced in the first month of ownership, I then had it serviced again about 3 months ago. It has been running perfectly fine (smooth engine, DSG etc) until a few weeks ago.

Forgot to add - yes, it has the centre box delete done.

Dump valve makes no difference it’s essentially the same as the recirc valve that came oem , just a with a bigger piston and uses a standalone solonoid so it’s louder , as for the r8 coil packs that is probably the best modification by far even on an OEM tune , you are right about the fuel though esso super unleaded and shell v power are the worse high octane fuel to run , Tesco momentum 99 octane is the best to run because it’s the most consistent basically you know your always getting the same level of quality everytime (sometimes shell v power can be absolute pants but other times it can be the creme de la crème)  the plugs you are running yes they are good and I have run them myself but again they are inconsistent and don’t like a drop off in fuel this with standard gaps on this plug with make problems worse.

well worth a watch on fuel quality

Small point.

The Tesco Momentum 99 might always be the same as in a minimum 99 octane on some areas.

Well i just know what can be delivered in Scotland which can be as much as 102 octane.

That will be when it came in from Continental Europe as is for Winter formulation, 100* or 102,

this can happen with Shell v-power as well as Greenergy and Shell do import fuels to depots as partners, and this is to the ports if not fuel from Refineries like Grangemouth and their distribution.

There are parts of the UK that Greenergy do not supply the ESSO fuels in, so it is not the same nation wide.

Just an update guys. The issue has now gone.

A couple of days before the issue (violent misfire) I added some engine oil to the car, I misread the dipstick and foolishly added more when it wasn't needed, about half a litre. I never thought that that this would cause such an issue, as I still had a slight misfire and rough idle before adding the extra engine oil (that started a few weeks before).

Anyway, yesterday I checked the dipstick and it was showing above the max line, so I siphoned some oil out with a syringe and tube through the dipstick hole.

I also removed and cleaned the map sensor at the back of the engine behind the inlet pipe.

Car now runs better than before and the slight dsg jerkiness I had before has also gone, dsg changes have gone really smooth now. I reset the DTC codes with a scanner and the EML light hasn't been back. I've driven around 30 miles in the last 2 days.

Not sure what fixed it but it seems to be sorted now, the car feels different.

Thanks all

My point ref the dump valve was it's another boy racer add on, not that it would cause the issue the op was having. As far as R8 coil packs, not sure I would ever bother, but each to their own.
