Skoda Fabia MK3 Monte Carlo 2017 TSI 1.2 - Rattle During Acceleration

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just purchased a used Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2 TSI Estate 2017 plate, lovely looking car and fantastic little petrol engine with manual 6 speed gearbox.

Got this car from a place in South Yorkshire, I first saw it for sale with the garage at beginning of Dec 2022 and ended up buying it a week ago - so it's fair to say it's been sat in a garage not moving potentially for a couple of months, not sure if this is a good or bad thing.

Car only has 30k miles on it and 1 previous owner - test drove last week and was lovely, purchased and comes with a 6 months warranty covering pretty much everything apart from wear and tear.

Got in car yesterday morning and started up fine, however I've noted that there is a metallic / hollow rattle whenever the accelerator is touched, this sound definitely was there before yesterday morning.

The rattle noise can be heard during all increments of RPM, however its a little strange because let's just say I'm travelling at 35MPH accelerating in 3rd or 4th gear you can gear the rattle, if I take my foot off the accelerator while still travelling at this speed in gear the rattle noise completely goes away?

Do you have any ideas? I'm thinking maybe something to do with accelerator housing as the noise goes when it isn't touched? Also heard maybe a loose heat shield maybe inside turbocharger?

Not too worried as its under warranty still - just a new noise that wasn't there when I got it a week back.

Thanks all 👍

Generally not good, do check the battery and probably best to give it a FULL recharge with an appropriate battery charger as you can get all sorts of unexpected issues from the battery being low even if the engine starts and the lights seem bright enough and you have yet to see any warning lights or messages.  Do consult the car's Owner's Manual and charger's instructions.   If you don't have the paper printed version, or want an electronic version, you can download a PDF version from here. - https://manual.skoda-auto.com/004/en-com/Models

Also you can check for any Recalls VW have put out here. - https://www.skoda-auto.com/services/recall-campaigns

And to complete the set system updates here. - https://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/

Noises are difficult to explain, understand and track down, perhaps if you can do a video/audio of the noise.  We have a rattle I think from an exhaust heatsheild under the car, perhaps that might be your issue.  Whatever it is you want it investigating ASAP as 6-months warranty soon disappears.

30k-miles in 5-6 years is neither good nor bad as it depends on the type of mileage done, the service, maintenance and repairs done and how the car was driven - do you have any firm evidence of service, maintenance and repairs history at all?

To help in future you could add your details to your name plate (I've no idea what it's called) at the side of your posts, for example as I have.

Welcome to the forum.

Hopefully just something lose.

What servicing has been done?

Have the spark plugs been replaced even though the car has only done 30,000 miles but is by recommendations by Skoda @ 4 years.

Same with the Cam belt, at 5 years by the manufacturers recommendations.

Some useful videos - but if you read the Owner's Manual and refer to it when required you will know more about your car than many other long term owners.

This being a forum and me not knowing what the noise actually sounds like I feel like I need to state that I'm not an expert in any way and I'm only trying to help fellow humans by sharing my previous experiences - I had a 2016 Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 1.2 TSI 90 from nearly new (was 18 months old and had 9k miles when I got it from DM Keith in Wakefield), always serviced at least every 10k miles/every 12 months but more often than not I'd try to service it every 6 months. At some point around mid 2020 the car started doing a very mild metallic rattle when using the accelerator, very much like what you're describing. In the end I never actually got it sorted because I reached the end of my PCP and couldn't justify paying to keep the car as at the time I wasn't commuting, however I did contact my regular garage (JBS Auto Designs over in the Chesterfield/Sheffield area) and they were pretty certain is was something to do with the turbo wastegate (I think that's what they said, but don't quote me on that as I might be getting the part name mixed up), and at the time I remember them saying that this part of the turbo which they believed to be failing is a fairly common thing on the EA211 1.2 TSI.
So perhaps thats something to look at
