Wi-Fi to garden office?

Featured Replies

We are having a garden office installed which will be about 12m from he house. We will need Wfi in it, signal from our router is poor in the area.

So I thought if I get some armoured shielded Ethernet Cable, I can plug one end into the router and trail the cable round the edge of the garden and into the office.

This is where I’m stuck, what do I need to plug the cable into in the office to turn it into Wi-Fi? Will also need an Ethernet socket for a phone to plug into.

Thanks.

The basic answer is Wireless Access Point.

So you feed in a LAN cable from your home router, and the device generates Wi-Fi signals on the other end (will need some configuration)

This of course can be fleshed out in more detail, might be good idea to let us know what ISP kit you have now.

I've got a similar set up to yours.    We have Ethernet cable from the house down through the bushes at the side of the garden into the cabin where we have a double Ethernet socket.  I have an old Apple AirPort Express A1088 connected by a short length ethernet cable and plugged into a mains socket in the cabin.  I see there's one of those on eBay for just over a tenner delivered.  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/304782728108?hash=item46f6775bac:g:HfkAAOSwcP5j0rFv&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoJXEEcVVBnNISRs4KXTe8maefRxgxwubndW2lYleTPmT2VSmCsuFronqJQ0DiL2ale8Q0sJqoIrlC5ttKu1MUcl6Y0kECcwGVKM7L5ZqQYgAdSDDAznBScuOsm9mumfEVBON4zsPmTeSvh3l4LAz1qgGKmQbZEyTGDX4FonYPDGMQq2S8DumI9Ks6eQhxYgAatHgIh57Cfvr2gW8E42fEeQ%3D|tkp%3ABk9SR-zq28nLYQ

If i were setting up another home office i would be looking ot do something like the below

So Ethernet cable from house to switch

Switch then has the Wireless Access point and phone plugged in you can then if needed plug anything else in, like a laptop or desktop with out using the Wifi if you wanted to a cable connection will normally be a much faster and reliable connection to Wifi

a switch like this you want to make sure its a gigabit switch these days as they have a higher transfer speed for the connection

Wireless access point like this

How fast is your Broadband in the house as depending on the wifi  point you use in the shed it could give you a reduced speed that's the only thing to really watch out for.

Plenty of other options to the ones above but if you living on video calls etc id pay a bit more to have a better connection in the shed:)

my brackground is in IT and telecoms  as a FYI

@dts87 I think you meant to link to a PoE Switch ;)

They could also just use this, one WAN feed port, and 4 LAN ports + WiFi

Really do need to know what gear the OP is going to connect now/future.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Mainly it will be my daughters laptop which will have the odd Zoom call plus her iPhone and Alexa, maybe a tv also with fire stick.

my wife has a laptop and a works phone she plugs an Ethernet cable in to make calls.

that about it.

with the above item

Cable goes into the back and it turns it into Wi-Fi the connect another cable into a different port to hard wire phone in.

would I need to do anything else or is it plug and play?

Sorry forgot to say we are on BT Fibre and get about 40mg download not great but in a village location..

I would do your homework on the above device, and also get @dts87's input also (as he might suggest different or something more powerful)  And anyone else that wishes to add some input.

Amazon is not always cheapest, so shop around also.

Youtube might have a video on setup/use scenarios that could assist.

It's sort of PnP, but you have got to login to a local web interface IP address (192.168.0.100 for example) and configure the name for your network, and password (you can use same values as indoor WiFi, and your phone should lock onto strongest signal)  Well that's the theory, but reality doesn't always match.

The 4x LAN ports will allow you to plug in phone/printer etc even a security camera should you wish (though it will need own power)

You've got a few options. Depends how much you want to spend, how far it is to the shed, and how much messing about you want to do to get it to work.

In the extreme of not spending money and doing a bit of dicking around, you can normally get an old broadband router to work as an access point. The main key is turning off DHCP and letting your ISPs router do that. There's various tutorials on youtube for doing that sort of thing. Going up a notch, you could buy a cable router and do something similar. Both will need you to run a cable down there. upside if, yo'll get a few network sockets.

Middle ground, if it's not an epic distance to the shed is a WiFi extender, or better still a wifi mesh. The TP-Link home meshes are pretty good. If you're using a basic extender, it might work better on the end of a cable run.

You don't neccessarily need a switch to be PoE, as long as the phone's got a power supply/PoE injector. You're probably better off going down a cable rather than WiFi as much as possible to avoid latancy on phone calls and zooms being an issue.

I had the same issue and wasted money trying a few wireless options. In the end hard wiring was the best option. I ran a cable and used a Netgear WAP. I used a WAX620 though there are cheaper options such as the WAX 214 for about £90. You may need a PoE switch as they take their power from the Ethernet cable You also use the switch for printers etc. I used a Netgear PoE switch. A GS305P for around £55 would do the trick. In practice you’ll have a different password to the house router.to access it but it’s no hassle.

I’m on a fibre network and there is very little if any drop off with the speed using this setup.
