Intermittent glow plug issue

Featured Replies

Hello, hoping for a bit of advice please.

I have a 2015 1.6TDI  and approximately 1 out of every 20 starts (I don’t use stop / start) the engine coughs a little on startup and the engine light comes on.  When I read the codes I get a P0672.  I then erase the codes and carry on, I’ve been operating the car on this cycle for around 3 months.  Apart from the slight cough the car starts fine.

My question is, does having the engine light on after the fault trigger affect the running of the vehicle once it has started ?  I did an 80 mile trip in January with the light on and didn’t  notice any difference.  My understanding is that the glow plugs are only for startups and once started have no bearing but I can’t seem to find anything definitive on this.

If it doesn’t affect the running then I’m tempted to just carry on like this until the car is due for MOT / service in the summer and get it sorted then.

  1. It may do, depending on the fault code and whether or not limp mode is activated. If limp mode is activated you won't have to ask...
  2. Yes and no. Their main function is in getting the car started, but they may remain activated until it reaches running temperature.

Does it cough when starting from cold or when it's at normal running temperature?

I think mostly if not always from cold

Thanks for the reply.  The car has never gone into limp mode

Absolutely not!

That can take between 4-6 miles at this time of year, the post start glowplug activation is measured in seconds and is to reduce emissions during the transient phase before full combustion is achieved through compression ignition.

Sounds like a faulty glowplug, nothing serious. I don't see the problem in leaving it until you get it to the garage in the summer. I believe it will fail the MOT if the light is on.

I suppose 5 minutes is technically 300 seconds so you are sort of right 😉 (EA288)

'Post-Start Glowing Post-start glowing helps reduce hydrocarbon emissions and combustion noises during the warm-up phase. For post-start glowing, the switch-on time of the onboard supply voltage is adjusted in the PWM duty cycle to ensure that there is an effective voltage of 4.4 V. Post-start glowing lasts a maximum of 5 minutes after starting the engine or until coolant temperature reaches 24 °C.'
